Wirelessly posted (MOT-QA30/00.72 UP.Browser/7.2.7.5.610 (GUI) MMP/2.0)

Basically, say you want to listen to a single dispatch channel, you tell the scanner to listen to that -talkgroup-, and you program the correct -control channel-, the scanner listens to the control channel for info on what talkgroups are active, when the dispatch talkgroup is active, it will switch to the appropriate frequency to hear traffic on the selected talkgroup. Make sense? As for helping you pick a scanner, where are you exactly? You may need a digital trunking scanner, which will run you up to $500 for a new model. Or you may be able to get away with something much cheaper.

Welcome to RR.com, dshank. Your questions show you are interested in knowing more about today's scanning environment. I suggest you take the time to do some studying and a good place to start is Trunking Basics in the RR Wiki. It is a bit of a long read, but chuck full of information explaining how trunking works.

You have already been asked about your location, so I urge you to return to your User CP (the left side of the second blue bar from the top of any page if you are logged in) and edit your profile to include your location (city and state) as you were requested to do in the material e-mailed to you when you registered. Once you fill in your location it will automatically show in each of your posts. Many of the questions you will have, and their answers, are going to be location specific and without having your location showing you will be asked over and over again what it is. So fill it in now and be done with it.

Again, welcome to RR.com.
