Default newbie: help buying right scanner

I live in Santa clara, ca, which uses an analog trunking system, Motorola type 2 smartnet. I'm looking at a Uniden Bearcat BC346XT. If I include "software w/frequencies" it adds $30. What is the software? Is it what I need to program my scanner from the web service? Can I assume it has headphone output (it's not listed as a feature)? After downloading frequencies, will I be able to specify which talkgroups I want to monitor?

Welcome to RR. Not sure what software you are being offered, but
FreeSCAN is FREE, and very good. It allows automatic download from this site, and you can select the talkgroups you want to download.

If you have a subscription to the RR database. Which is $15 for 6 months.
