Wow, the 296 does phase II I didn't realize that any of the NEW digital scanners---106/500 and 396/996XT's---did Phase II, P-25.

Not a problem Is it in the RR Canadian database? Have you tried the Atlantic and Maritime forums? There are a lot of helpful people that are on those forums closer to home to help you. Any VHF systems I've ever programmed for my 106 have been imported from RR to my programming software to the scanner. The Canada forums are down below the US state forums. When you go to the database, click on Canada and the different provinces will come up. You may want to download Pro96com from www.psredit.com and find them out for yourself.
HTH,
Larry

Is it necessary to program custom tables for certain trunk systems, or can you just put in the control channels and put in the talkgroups without the custom table set?

You will need to run Trunker or Unitrunker to determine the voice channels and Custom Frequency Table(s).

The 296D requires all frequencies and Custom Tables entered in Motorola or P25 VHF/UHF Trunking systems.

Yes for 800/900 Mot/P25 systems. You will need to set a CC only Plan.

It is light years better than a 296.

Using it with Freescan makes it the ultimate scanner.

Yes for Motorola systems. You'll also need T-Tables for rebanded 800MHz Motorola systems. The current CC on all P25 systems will auto set T-Tables if P25 Auto is selected.

I had a 785D and used Butel 785D, ProScan and ScanControl. All three use the same program for 250D/785D/296D/796D but I normally used Butel.

ProScan will work with them and most Unidens as will ScanControl which also works with newer GRE/RS digitals. Butel has a different program for all other scanners.
