Default Programming Software

What is the best and easiest user friendly software for a newbie to use to program a trunking scanner? Is there any particular free software that anyone recommends?

Welcome to RR. Software is scanner dependent. Please indicate what you have.

I have a Radioshack 197. From looking at this site, I see there is a free demo of the Radioshack software, but I'm wondering if there is free software I can use to program this radio?

Default I'm new too and my findings...

I'm a new owner of a Pro 197 also and I found only three software options available, none of them are free.

ARC500 or ARC500 Pro
Win500
PSREdit500

All of the can be found on the wiki page: Object Oriented Scanner Software

Object Oriented Scanner Software - The RadioReference Wiki

The Arc500 PRo is offered as a one week demo for the Pro197, it was part of the software package with the scanner. I use Butel software for the BCT15x and BCD996xt, so it will likely be my choice.

Good Luck and enjoy.
