You can start here - it discusses the connection itself, along with Windoze type stuff you need to know...

Connecting Radios to Soundcards - The RadioReference Wiki

The other part you need is software - it just so happens that the big 3 (ARC-XT, ProScan and FreeScan (which is freeware)) all have recording capability (note that ARC-XT requires the use of the Pro version for this - the other 2 don't). In addition there's the very popular freeware program ID Tracker which is set up for recording.

The links for these modules can be found here...

Uniden DMA Software Support - The RadioReference Wiki

Now all of this assumes that you understand how DMA works, how to set up recording tags and so forth. If all of that seems a bit much, yell - there's lots more we can give you...Mike

I've been using xcorder(free) with my BC unit for almost a year. It's almost plug-n-play, connect to the scanner and into the pink mic jack on the comp and hit record. It works flawless in vista, though I had some permission problems in XP on limited accounts.(might have been on my end, but still worked fine)

The advantage with using software like I had suggested is that you can, depending on the software, get more on the file name than just a date/timestamp. You can get things like the talkgroup name, frequency and other more useful information.

As an example, look at item 4 of...

Default Recording

Freescan is great. I also use Scanner Recorder: It's great for recording unattended.

"Scanner Recorder provides a switched recorder that listens to the sound coming into the audio card and if the sound is above the minimum threshold, the recorder operates. If the sound level falls below the threshold, the recorder pauses.

Since the recorder starts and stops based on what it hears, Scanner Recorder incorporates an anti-clipping feature that keeps the very beginning of the audio that breaks the squelch threshold from being clipped off. The result is that when sound is played back, there is no noticeable "click". Also the beginning of the audio event is not clipped off (like mechanical vox recorders do).

The program has a VOX control that allows the you to save disk space when no sound is present in the signal."
