Default Getting started on the cheap

I am looking at getting started on the cheap, and I dont want to spend money on useless items
any advice I live in a rural area of Ireland

More information would be helpful such as specific location in Ireland?

Ireland (Countrywide) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference

If the database is correct and up to date, it looks like you need a European model scanner that can receive at 160 Mhz and 84 Mhz.

Thanks for advice, I had already purchased a Radio Shack in the USA and found that itdid not operate here, I passed it back to a friend in the USA
