A conventional VHF/UHF scanner for just your county. To hear any of the trunked stuff, you'll need a trunk tracking scanner. Good conventional: Uniden BC125AT, trunking: Uniden BC346XT. If you want to listen to the DOD, a digital trunk tracker will be neccessary.

OK. I'm new to this not sure what trunked means

Do a wiki search for trunked systems its like a group of frequencies controlled by a computer system in order for the send and recieve calls to go through....that's a very basic definition. Trust me do a little reading on theses topics andvyoubwill understand more!!!
