I want to scan our local (and others) airport's CTAF frequency, 122.9 MHz while I'm flying R/C at the airport. This will give me a heads up to "clear" the area when an aircraft is arriving in the pattern.

What modulation scheme is this? Do I need an AM or FM receiver?

I think they're AM...need to verify so I know what's going on.

I also like the fact that airports' AWOS (automated weather observation system) is a frequency very close to that used for CTAF. Since the same "com" radio is used in the aircraft to receive both functions (that is CTAF as well as AWOS) it only stands to reason that the same de-modulation scheme applies to both.

I get air traffic as well as local, up to date weather from the same band...as long as I know what to buy to demod the audio.

Can someone steer me in the right direction please

Yes, that and all the VHF air freqs would be AM. If that's all you will be into, the most basic radios will do that. Something simple like the Uniden 75xlt will do that and more, including NOAA.
