As someone new to the scanner community, a new knowledge page has opened in your brain. A good way to learn/self teach, is FCC part 90 in the "CFR" or Code of Federal Regulations. The "digital age" has totally revolutionized 2 way radio communications and you have to begin understanding the technical aspects, since your scanner is actually a computer/radio receiver, all in one package. Part 90 is huge in number of topics and pages of information. Begin by casually viewing the "glossary pages/index" of what regulations affect a given type of scanner interests you might enjoy listening to. For example, scroll down to the Railroad Section and merely get an overview of the rapid changes underway affecting freight and passenger rail radio systems nationwide. Granted, you will be buried in technical jargon and words and phrases your not used to, but just get an "overview" of how to research frequencies, and their use on the trains in your area. I hope it fries your brain initially, but stay positive ,and get on this blog and ask for explanations from the thousands of folks nationwide who preceded you years ago and have a treasure trove of knowledge on that topic to share with you. Good luck, and keep coming back with questions!
