Having a great time with my new BCD436HP but still learning...

Even after reading the manual information and some forum posts I am not getting my head wrapped around what "Tone out" is all about.

From scanning I know that fire and EMS send out a tone before they start talking, but I have some questions about what the Tone out settings are on my scanner.

1. What is the Tone out option for in my scanner?

2. Why would I want to use it?

There seems to be some ambiguity in referring to the tone that gets sent by dispatch and the customizable tone that the scanner will make when receiving a certain tone?

Thanks!

Thank you, those were very helpful.

So basically:

If you are using Tone out, that is all you are listening for is dispatches preceded by a tone.

It is primarily to keep your scanner quiet until these tones are detected.

If a person wants to monitor police and other frequencies continuously there really is no need for tone out because the scan will pick these up anyway?
