I'm thinking about buying a pro97 but I want to make sure I can use it to listen to our local fire and sheriff and if I will be able to find the info so I can program it my self I will post my location the best I can if someone would be so kind to help me out plz....

No I don't believe so. Those services use p25 phase 1 systems which are digital and not scannable by the pro-97. You will need a newer scanner like an Hp-1 to pick up those services in your area.

First Responders Interoperable Radio System Team (FIRST) Trunking System, Various, Maryland - Scanner Frequencies
some on this system are P-25 phase 2.
and some are encrypted, those you can't get at all.
myself, I would try to plan ahead and a phase 2 radio will receive phase 1 and analog stuff.

The PRO-97 is very old technology. It doesn't even support rebanding on older analog systems let alone receive digital systems. I highly recommend the Uniden HomePatrol-II.

The HP2 is not the only Phase 2 compatible scanner - there are a few others, viz.
