I purchased some rechagable batteries, moved the switch to NI-MH, plugged in the charger. The charger reads charg9 and the battery symbol stays on. The manual does not mention a "9", and says that the battery symbol should go out. Did I do something wrong? Thanks for your help.

the manual says

CHArg is what it would show when charging.

as always a lot of folks recommend a separate smart charger
not the 15 minute kind
the kind that shows true capacity of the cells.
maha c-9000 is a great one.
and of course extra cells..

The scanner needs to be turned off to charge the batteries, the LCD will go blank when the charge is complete.
