From the New York State Police Newsroom:
"On June 6, at 5:45 a.m. the New York State Police received a call from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora regarding two prisoners that were unaccounted for during a 5:30 a.m. bed check. The State Police are now currently searching for the two escaped prisoners.
Richard Matt, 48 years old, a white male, 6’ tall, 210 pounds, with black hair and hazel eyes. He has tattoos on back “Mexico Forever”, a heart on his chest and left shoulder, and a marine corps insignia on his right shoulder.
David Sweat, 34 years old, white male, 5’11” tall, 165 pounds, brown hair and green eyes. He has tattoos on his left bicep and his right fingers.
Both are considered to be a danger to the public. If located DO NOT approach them. Contact 911 or the New York State Police immediately at (518) 563-3761.
Sweat is serving a sentence of life without parole following his conviction in Broome County for one count of Murder 1st Degree after he caused the death of a Broome County Sheriff’s Deputy on July 4, 2002. Sweat was transferred to Clinton Correctional on October 30, 2003.
Matt is serving a sentence of 25 years to life following his conviction in Niagara County for three counts of murder, three counts of kidnapping, and two counts of robbery after he kidnapped a male victim and caused his death by beating him on December 3, 1997. Matt was transferred to Clinton Correctional on July 10, 2008.
Anyone in the Dannemora area should contact the New York State Police if they saw or heard anything early this morning, or find that they have a vehicle which is unaccounted for."

Good post with info and mugs. To me when cop killers and sexual predators escape it's a very big concern. All are a concern but ones who already took it upon themselves to have no thought or fear regarding law enforcment they will do anything to continue to escape. I hope these 2 guys are caught soon without incident. Any word on how these guys got out?

That explains where there are more than 250 folks on the Clinton CTY feed...
I used to deal with that facility for my work. A lot of REALLY bad dudes in that place.

This is one of the older NYS prisons with 60 foot walls all around. Quite an interesting design; at least back when I was familiar, some of the more senior prisoners having private plots on which they can garden or relax. Looking at Google Earth it seems they may still be there.

It will be interesting to learn how they got out--if they did and are not just hiding somewhere inside.

Have A Nice Day

This gets better. My question is, how were they able to do this unnoticed, as it must have taken a while to prep.

From the Daily Mail:

"Matt and Sweat arranged objects in their beds to make it look 'like people were sleeping ... with these sweatshirt hoodies on,' Cuomo said.
The pair had cells next to each other and had acquired power tools, which they used to cut through the steel walls of their cells, authorities said.
They then followed a catwalk 'down an elaborate maze of pipes into tunnels and exited a series of tunnels at the manhole cover,' the governor said.
'It was elaborate, it was sophisticated,' he added. 'It involved drilling through steel walls, steel pipes.'"

Wow rings a familiar bell. Wonder how long it took to cut that sucker actually hacking away at it from start to finish. So they voted through cell and then into pipes?

I have the original scanner audio of the incident involving the David P. Sweat incident in Broome County.
I have all of the activity over the following days, but this is how it started.

And .........................
The State Police received the initial call about it around 04:01 a.m. but NEVER responded.
His body was found around 05:45 a.m.

I've uploaded a snippet of the original scanner feed it in a zip file with an MSWord (docx) file of the investigation.

It was brutal and the fact that the perp. is back on the street is disgusting.

2nd one in custody......time for Upstate NY to get back to normal.....

Kudos to the North Country Law Enforcement Agencies, both escapees are now accounted for. Just goes to show anything can happen anywhere, and continued joint training sessions among agencies can help prepare for situations like this.
