Default New FDNY EMS UHF Freqs?

Just out of curiosity, why is FDNY EMS getting new UHF frequencies? I know that the frequencies they have now aren't particularly great and that there is a lot of static and dead spots. Are the new UHF freqs supposed to improve on this? Or are they just overhauling the whole system because Suppression is going from VHF to UHF? I'm just curious to know if they will be improved at all.

I'm not even really sure what that is supposed to mean. Does anyone have an answer to my question?

For all I know it isn't the frequency it's the crappy XTS 3500R's that we have.

Manhattan ALS units will be testing the XTS5000 starting soon. It seems they will have some new Med Channels on the trunked system for EKG stuff.

As far as the old system, I think it was just better to start new and build out the system from the bottom up. The old system has been around and just patched for some time.

The xts3500 is a crappy radio but one of the problems is the speaker mics. We went from using the MX/Astros with no mic's, so when you talked you had to pick up the radio and hold it in front of you. When the 3500 with the mics came in we could leave it in the case and talk but we cut down on the range of the radio. The new stuff is suppose to have more voters to over come some of these problems.

What trunked system are you referring to?

Thanks. I didn't even know about this system. Will this replace the 800 trunk or just supplement it?

I can't say much about the portable radios now being carried by EMS personell, but I will tell you I installed a boatload of voters in the 70's when the H&HC went from VHF to the new T-band UHF system. Working the boroughs of Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx, I never had any problem with reception or transmission with my trusty 4 channel crystal MX portable.
