I was told by a pretty good source that this scanner will not work on the new p25 system and I was wondering if anyone could simplify why it wont work. I am kind of new at this and although I can program the scanner from the RR database you will sometimes hear communication and other times its pure digital tones. I am going to get another scanner as I was told the pro-106 or the Gre 500 would do a fine job on tracking this system, but again, I am a newbie but I find all this stuff kind of interesting. Any help would be appreciated

Your source is apparently not all that good. The PRO-96 should work just fine on that system.

My Pro 96 does NOT work on this system. Haven't spent a lot of time monkeying with it, but here's what happens:

1. program the 460.5 trunk CC and set both that channel as well as the bank to MO[torola] mode.
2. Press Scan
3. The scanner occasionally stops and goes to a discrete voice chan. A low-numbered (in the thirties-forties?) TG ID appears which seems correctly to match up what others have mentioned as being valid TG ID's for this system.
4. However, the displayed frequency shows up as something in the 48x.xxx MHz. band such as 487.4625 or whatever.
5. There's nothing present on that freq., so the radio returns to the trunk CC. Since this all happens so fast, the TG is probably still active, so the radio retunes to 487.4625 (or whatever freq.). Rinse, repeat, go to step 3. This process continues apparently until the TG has stopped talking.

The same pro96 works more-or-less OK on a 800 MHz P25 LSM system near here but does *not* seem to work using the VHF P25 NYSEG system when using the trunk CC method. The pro96 does work fine if you directly program one or more of the discrete voice channels in the 0269 system (haven't tried this on Onondaga)...

It's possible that it needs to be programmed with a custom "channel spacing" parameter ? A while back on another thread someone said that there are some options for this in Starr's Win96 which are *not* available from the scanner's keyboard... Perhaps something in there needs to be tweaked, but I'm not a Win96 user (being a Linux user and Win96 doesn't run there)...

Best Regards

Max

I seem to be getting the same results as you are but maybe there is something that I am not doing correctly but it is indeed frustrating.

Max, you are on the right track. VHF and UHF Motorola and P25 trunked systems need at least one base and offset listing in a custom table. 800 and 700MHz frequencies have standardized channel numbers assigned to each frequency and are preprogrammed into radios and scanner. The trunked system sends channel numbers down the control channel to assign users. UHF and VHF do not have standardized channel numbers so they must be artifically created. This is where the custom tables come into play. If you have the programming cable, download Pro96Com and it will decode the control channel information and give you the proper information to enter into the scanner.

since you are a linux user i would recomend having a virturalized windows system, for just such an occasion. Think of it as a utility program....

I programmed a Gre PSR 500 on this system and it works just fine but the pro96 will not work on this system. Studgeman, I think you are on to something about custom settings that need to be applied to the pro96 but I do not have the knowledge at this time to make it work, any suggestions?

I data logged this system a little bit and came up with the following for the tower information
FileVersion:6
-TowerInfo
#This section is here for information only. With the exception
#of the Call Sign(s), This data is not Read back into the program at all.
System ID : 2AE
System Name :
WACN : BEE00
Tower Number (Decimal): 101
Tower Number (Hex) : T0101
Tower Description : (null)
Control Capabilities : Data,Voice,Registration
Call Sign(s) :
Timestamp : Sat Feb 13 14:47:00 2010

-Tables
#Format: Table ID,Base Freq,Spacing,Input Offset,Assumed/Confirmed,BandWidth,Slots
00,851.00625,0.00625,-45.00000,"Confirmed",0.00625,1
01,380.00000,0.02500,2.50000,"Confirmed",0.01250,1
02,380.01250,0.02500,2.50000,"Confirmed",0.01250,1

04,450.00500,0.02000,3.12500,"Confirmed",0.01250,1

-Frequencies
#Format: Channel,Usage,Frequency(/Slot),Input Frequency(/Slot),Hit Count
"03-0261","vd",453.26250,458.26250,17
"03-0263","vd",453.28750,458.28750,11
"03-0817","vd",460.21250,465.21250,11
"03-0819","vd",460.23750,465.23750,13
"03-0821","vd",460.26250,465.26250,5
"03-0829","a",460.36250,465.36250,0
"03-0834","a",460.42500,465.42500,0

"03-0840","c",460.50000,465.50000,0

My question is can this data be imported into the Radio Shack pro 96 and if so how can this be accomplished

This is the information you need to program into your PRO-96:

-Tables
#Format: Table ID,Base Freq,Spacing,Input Offset,Assumed/Confirmed,BandWidth,Slots
00,851.00625,0.00625,-45.00000,"Confirmed",0.00625,1
01,380.00000,0.02500,2.50000,"Confirmed",0.01250,1
02,380.01250,0.02500,2.50000,"Confirmed",0.01250,1
03,450.00000,0.01250,5.00000,"Confirmed",0.01250,1
04,450.00500,0.02000,3.12500,"Confirmed",0.01250,1

You really only need tables 3 and 4 because the system operates exclusively on UHF.

You also need to program the control channel(s) into memory slots:

"03-0829","a",460.36250,465.36250,0
"03-0834","a",460.42500,465.42500,0
"03-0835","a",460.43750,465.43750,0
"03-0840","c",460.50000,465.50000,0

Set the PRO-96 for CC-only tracking and you should be good to go.

Based on other info that I have, this particular Tower is in Syracuse. And ... thanks for being the first to provide the System ID!

Thanks Dave but like I said I have very limited knowledge of what to do. I am reading and learning but it will take some time. I am copying and pasting a cvs file from win 96, maybe you could tell me what values need to be changed within this group. Thanks again

Your problem is in this section. None of these tables are correct, but specifically tables 3 and 4 must be changed in order to track the Onondaga County TLMR. They aren't even in the right band.

03,450.00000,0.01250,5.00000,"Confirmed",0.01250,1
04,450.00500,0.02000,3.12500,"Confirmed",0.01250,1

The above are the correct tables as captured by Pro96Com. I don't know exactly which fields in the PRO-96 data represent what information, so I can't say exactly how to transform one into the other without doing some research. Beyond a certain level of involvement, my consulting services are not free.

I don't mean to sound curt or rude or selfish. I can get your scanner working, but if it will take up otherwise productive time, then I need to benefit as well. I'm simply not in the financial position to donate oodles of time.

If another RR.com member wants to take up the challenge and work this out, then more power to them. I'm not competing with anyone.

Try Base: 450 Step: 12.5 Offset:12288.

If you need Lo and Hi use 12288 and 16383.

Check PGM-TRUNK-FUNC-4 to see that it is set to TABLE

PGM-TRUNK-FUNC-2 should show the TABLE entries.

Good Luck.

Thanks guys for all your help but the Gre 500 works really well on this system and the pro96 doesn't, its probably just outdated for this system but that is ok I have one that works. Thanks for your replies and I might mess with it occasionally to try to get it to work but it is not an urgency. I have learned alot from reading postings on this forum, it is a great place to acquire information
