Picking up police freq 154.725
Hi, I am a scanner listener in Ontario, Canada. I am picking up great VHF band conditions past few weeks this summer. One frequency that comes in real good is 154.725. I am trying to determine where it is. I have heard a few towns mentioned but can't seem to signify where it is. Some where in the Albany or glen falls , East NY state Area. Anybody help me with this one.
Thanks

On 154.725, if you are receiving a PL of 127.3, or are hearing it referred to as "Headquarters", it is the Warren County Sheriff's Office.

It is unlikely that someone in Canada is picking up 154.725 from Rensselaer County. It is a low-powered repeater for the jail.
More likely is Wayne County, NY. It is a shared repeater among several local police departments.
Having the CTCSS tone would help to nail it down.

Its me again. I have determined it is Warren County. I have listen to the tranmissions regarding roads and certain areas like glens falls. I have picked up Wayne County in NY, 154.845, as well as Jefferson County 154.755. But yes 154.725 is in the Adirondacks (Warren County). I pick this up periodically, i am in Eastern part of Ontario in Canada, so i am close to NY border.

Warren County's channels can really get out sometimes. I have heard reports of the fire alert channel (154.175) being heard in Quebec.

Warren County brings back memories for me too. I was listening to Warren County back in the late 70's in Hanover NH on a Bearcat 210 scanner and using the built-in whip antenna. I lived halfway up a hill lining the CT river valley and faced to the West. I had to find a hot spot in my bedroom to hear them good on 154.725. An outside antenna on the roof made a world of difference. This was back when I was in high school. I could also hear the fire alert channel on 154.175 although poorly. I could also hear them on their VHF-Lo band channel on 33.90 along with Lakes Region Mutual Aid fire in NH plus a few other departments. I recall hearing a radio tech ("Radio Repair") on the system once and he advised he was atop Mt. Prospect and about work on the system.
When I listened to them in the late 70's on 154.725, they were always very professonal sounding and I noted a few things about the radio system. Audio quality through the repeater was EXCELLENT at all times. I could also hear headquarters directly at home in Hanover NH on the input on 158.79. I noticed the repeater operated on carrier squelch and a 1750Hz or similar tone burst was required bring up the repeater. Every unit including headquarters had a tone burst on their signal at the beginning of a transmission. The repeater sounded like it had a notch filter in the audio path to filter out most of the tone burst. The carrier squelch was set a little tight but it worked OK. There were a few times where the repeater was on the air after being keyed up by a unit and another distant department's traffic was weak into the repeater but strong enough to hold the squelch open and keep the repeater on the air for the duration of the co-channel traffic. Once the repeater finally went off the air, the distant stations wouldn't bring it on again because of the tone burst required.
Dispatch was called by their FCC callsign directly and not by "Dispatch", "Base", "Headquarters", or any other name. It was KEC855 back in the 70s. It was always something like "KEC855 to <unit number>..." or "<unit number> to KEC855...". Later on, it became "KNED338" because of the FCC callsign change.
I later heard Warren County in Durham NH when I was attending UNH. I lived in one of the high rise dorms on campus and could hear them but poorly. The furthest I've heard them was in York ME when I was hilltopping as a ham and doing general tuning around and listening on Mt. Agamenticus, about 30 miles away from UNH. Mt "Aggy" as it's often called is a hill close to the seacoast and is 600ft. above sea level. Although it's not that high of a hill, it has some good height above average terrain (HAAT) because there's not much else around it in the NH-ME seacoast area.
Warren County's channels really DO get out! It's been at least 20 years since I last listened to them as VHF DX traffic....back in the old days of CSQ and tone burst for Warren County.

Warren County utilizes a four site simulcast system at these sites:
1. Municipal Center, Queensbury
2. Prospect Mountain, Lake George
3. Gore Mountain, North Creek
4. Hague (behind the fire station, I believe)
Since the new system went on the air, the following frequencies and channel assignments have been added to the simulcast:
154.725 (127.3) - Sheriff's Dispatch
159.090 (127.3) - Sheriff's Headquarters (Data & Info; simplex)
154.175 (127.3) - Emergency Services Alerting
155.295 (110.9) - EMS Control
151.025 (110.9) - Emergency Services ESR-1 Operations Channel
33.90 (110.9) is not simulcast, but is at all four sites for select transmit. However, with the coverage of Prospect Mountain and Gore Mountain, I don't believe the other two sites get selected much.

Actually,
154.725 (127.3) is "Headquarters"
159.090 (127.3) is "Dispatch"
