I would like to purchase a handheld scanner to monitor the NYPD, PAPD, FDNY,EMS, etc. in Manhattan South. Uniden told me that in order to purchase the right type of scanner I need to know what type of trunking system the NYPD uses-digital, analog, or both, as well as the company providing the service, etc. Can anyone provide me with the correct info? The NYPD won't release that info over the phone. Thanks.

NYPD, FDNY AND EMS are all analog. on the 470mhz-490mhz. FDNY and EMS are on a new narrowband frequencies so you'll need a scanner capable of the 6.25hz channel step.

however the NYC DOIIT Trunk system does have most of the city agencies on it. Even some Fire and ems. However you wont need a digital scanner just a trunking one with alpha tags so you wont get confused.

A RS pro-163 would fine. less than $200 and 1000 ch plus trunking is a good deal. this is the desktop scanner
PRO-163 1000 CH Triple Trunking Mobile/Base Scanner - RadioShack.com

or you can get the handheld version the RS pro-164
PRO-164 1000-Channel Handheld Scanner - RadioShack.com
