Hey guys! First off I'd like to say Happy New Years to everyone. I was wondering if the radio shack PRO-51 is a good scanner to start off with? I'll be using it at home for now since I'll be going for my ham license in the spring.

Primarily I'll want to program it to the local precincts by me, special ops and traffic, some nassau county channels, nj police channels and the local airports since I'll be working at JFK in the spring time as well.

Thanks!

See below...

Yes, will work.

> some nassau county channels,

Yes, will work - on some channels.

> nj police channels

No, won't work (SPNJ is trunked).

> and the local airports since I'll be working at JFK in the spring

Will work, on the air band channels and most non-public safety channels.

What does getting your ham ticket have to do with were you use your scanner?

He's referring to the "No mobile scanning in NY unless you're a ham" law. And please, let's not turn this thread into another beat-the-dead-horse debate about that law again.
