As a ham operator & NY resident, I would like to be able to monitor NYSEG while mobile. I'm not going to risk my NYS pistol permit by putting a P25 capable scanner in the car. I could load the 2500 with a bunch of ham repeaters & NYSEG and achieve what I want & probably still be legal.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Any particular reason why not?
I'v listened 2 or 3 times on an Icom PCR-2500, I can't imagine a reason why an XTS wouldn't do just fine.

Yeah, it sure sounds that simple...

Short answer: if you had to ask here if it was possible, you shouldn't be trying it. :)

The technical reason is that it's VERY challenging to keep an Astro25 radio such as an XTS2500/5000 from transmitting on the system, even without you ever pressing PTT. The radio will actually send a signal to the system operator and it will give him the option to remotely disable your radio, turning your $800 Moto into an expensive doorstop.
