I believe a lot of them are on LTR systems in the UHF band. I was never too interested in them but you can try to scan during school open/close hours.

Default NYC school bus radio

Yes, I think you are correct. They must lease radios from 3rd party. I see a lot of activity on Staten Island 2-way

The City of NY Dept. of Education contracts with many different companies to provide school bus and mini-van service. Each company may or may not be using a two-way radio. Some smaller operations will rent "NextHells", some will use cellphones, some will have talkgroups on a rented landmobile LTR system, etc. The first step is to get the name of the bus companies (although some may be controlled by a local taxi/car service like RJR on Staten Island is the corporate name of Community Car Service), then you need to see if the bus/taxi names are in the FCC database for their own freqs. You may have to camp out on the local LTR system and decipher the use of the talkgroups by listening to unit numbers/names, personal names, addresses, place names, etc.

Happy hunting!

Default NYC school bus

Thank you for the information. I will try to hunt using my wife's radio on her bus. Perhaps by keying up I can decipher the talk group.
