Recently I've been seeing some NYSDOT trucks in the Cornwall and West Point area with 1/4 wave UHF antennas on the mirror along with the Low Band antenna on the roof. Just wondering if anyone might know what they are testing, or if they plan on switching to UHF.

Thanks

I'll take a stab and say... could be one of them thar wide area systems talked about giving it a whirl...or maybe trucks have crossband for portables when they get out of truck...as required they have to report in and out of cab during ice and snow ops...DOT has been seen using UHF ports for traffic at temp work sites

As noted, it could be for a vehicular repeater. I have also come across licenses for GPS/tracking in the UHF band for DoT. I have logged vehicular repeaters in use in Rome, Oneida East, Watertown, and another in the Watkins Glen area. Below are the most common statewide frequencies, and it should be noted that they are also used for traffic control details; low power.

Well this will be interesting...since all the Low Band radios are loaded with state wide regions...if they decide to switch all the Regions i am sure the sales guy will retire in cancun
