I have lived in Harlem for the past 12 years, I live in the 25/28/32 combined and sometimes combined with 26/30. I hear lots and lots of open mics, mostly at night. When I lived in the 90/94 area of Brooklyn they'd get a lot of open mics during the day and shift change I noticed. I thought it was because they were changing batteries and readjusting the radios on their belts? Could be anything from a faulty PTT to just a sticky button that came in contact with sticky residue.
Anything is possible and I'm sure the dirtiest environment is gonna be the subways and the new APX7000 radios are now.
I do a lot of contract work in the tunnels and I know how disgusting and dirty it can be.
I've noticed that transit is mainly on the APX radios and i saw an EMS LT with one in midtown yesterday. I am assuming the EMS APX is for DoITT uhf trs.
The equipment seems to frequently change but I know that the actual system and Architecture won't change in the next 20-30 years.
It'd be an impossible, financially inconceivable nightmare.
Why fix what ain't broke?
