I have lived in Harlem for the past 12 years, I live in the 25/28/32 combined and sometimes combined with 26/30. I hear lots and lots of open mics, mostly at night. When I lived in the 90/94 area of Brooklyn they'd get a lot of open mics during the day and shift change I noticed. I thought it was because they were changing batteries and readjusting the radios on their belts? Could be anything from a faulty PTT to just a sticky button that came in contact with sticky residue.
Anything is possible and I'm sure the dirtiest environment is gonna be the subways and the new APX7000 radios are now.
I do a lot of contract work in the tunnels and I know how disgusting and dirty it can be.

I've noticed that transit is mainly on the APX radios and i saw an EMS LT with one in midtown yesterday. I am assuming the EMS APX is for DoITT uhf trs.

The equipment seems to frequently change but I know that the actual system and Architecture won't change in the next 20-30 years.
It'd be an impossible, financially inconceivable nightmare.
Why fix what ain't broke?

They are going with the Vertex VXP824. Just found out today they started issuing them to Cops in all commands. Starting in manhattan at least from what I was able to find out.

No, didn't say that. They are just getting new radios.

As stated before, NYPD does have a handful of encrypted channels (IAB, CW-4 etc) but everything else is in the clear.
