You need to improve your antenna system. Antenna will make much more of a difference than the radio will.

You would be best served by spending your money on a better antenna and feed line than a new radio.

If he wants a portable then I don't think an antenna tower will help much unless he gets an adapter. That more applies to mobiles.

Changing portables will not increase his ‘range’ as much as he thinks.

I never said it did however he can't really get a better antenna if he wants a portable because he wants something to use to respond calls with. You are only limited to the antenna the radio is provided with.
