What license class? There are a few classes and there can be quite a difference in the costs of radios.

For VHF/UHF equipment the cost isn't excessive. If your talking HF equipment (say a General Class Set-up) depending on what you want to do your looking at least $1,000 for a simple station.

Or as little as $100 for a QRP CW Station. It all depends on what you want to do.

First you need to get the tech license. If you pass that, you can take the General test at the same time for no additional cost. The licenses are very cheap. You need the knowledge though. This is a skills based license. What are you using to study?

What is the first step to get started studying, and what are the basics I need for a radio?

Look around this site ARRLWeb: ARRL Home Page and learn more about the hobby. You really need to be more specific in your questions. There are so many options for a basic radio, like frequencies you are interested in (HF, VHF, UHF, etc.), before anyone can answer your questions.

I'd suggest that you start with the book, it will answer most of those questions. And you are looking at the Technician class first. Once you get your technician you can get a General class and then an Extra class.

The book covers the theory and then has a practice test, there are several others on the interner, but I don't remember them right now. Depending on how much you know (the test will cover some basics in electricity among other topics) I'd say about a week of reading it will be fine. It is not very hard stuff, so you don't have to memorize the entire book, some of the stuff you just have to read it and you'll be fine.

If you just want to listen on Short Wave or scanning, you don't need a license. "Ham radio" is another term for "Amateur Radio." MURS, FRS,, and CB require no license.

Here is what I found

ARRLWeb: ARRL's License Manual Series

I hear that these are really good books. Most say it is all you need to pass the basic. I have been thinking about getting my license too. Just for the heck of it. I don't know if I'll actually ever use it. But might be neat to just have.

Like others have said...what are you interested in? Talking to people overseas? Or around your local vicinity?
Is there a budget you want to stick to? Or is the sky the limit?
