Default Newbie looking for a good starter radio.

Hi guys, I am new to this arena, but have gotten my license and am looking for any helpful info on what I should buy for a first radio? Kind of looking for a new hobbie, but I also live in the boonies, and am kinda preparing for an emergency. Thanks

Get a girlfriend instead. They're more fun and less expensive. Usually.

If that doesn't work get a book. ARRL Technicians Manual from Amazon. Study. Find a club at ARRLWeb: ARRL Home Page. Take the test and hook up with members. Buy equipment after talking to those members.

Next, get your General ticket.

LOL! You know, I don't know how I missed that you had your ticket already. Good luck with the woman.

If you live in the boonies, I would start with a mobile. More juice to hit the repeaters and you can take it inside if you need too. Kind of a pita though. If you have tons of cash, get two. Or you could get a VHF/UHF/HF rig for when you get your General ticket. You'll still want a mobile for the vehicle though.

Get the HT later.
