Default Idiot shooting tracer rounds burns down indoor gun range.

Perhaps while they discuss new gun control regulation, they add a test for intellegence (minimal level for sure, but above what this guy has). Four-alarm fire engulfs Dallas shooting range | wfaa.com Dallas - Fort Worth Only a true idiot would attempt to fire tracer rounds in an indoor gun range.

The four-alarm fire that engulfed the DFW Gun Range at 1607 West Mockingbird Lane in Dallas Sunday afternoon was apparently triggered by unauthorized tracer rounds.

It was probably someone who doesn't like guns. All they need to do is go do that at every gun range and then there won't be any places left for people to legally shoot off their guns. And they'll destroy lots of guns and ammo in the process. All the while it looks like a lil' ol' accident. Like something steven erkel did.

Idiot or genius?

I don't really get this. Any range I've ever been at was all concrete, steel and sand with a trap to catch rounds where they could be collected later. A tracer would do nothing before being snuffed out. The only paper was the hanging target(s) which, if ignited, would burn out in a few seconds.

According to one of the news reports the trap area behind the targets was filled with shredded tires.

Kinda stupid, but I guess I can see it in a way.

Seems like it would be a lot easier to sift sand to recover the lead though. Picking it out of rubber could be rough. Maybe they just scoop it all out and replace it and recover the lead off-site?

I'm not convinced a flammable substance used for a bullet trap is a wise idea though.

Reminds me of a time we were out in a Bureau of Land Management area at a popular place to to target shoot. Someone had left behind some "exploding targets". We'd never used them before, so we tried them out. Scared the he77 out of us when we hit the first one, it really went up. I thought we were going to end up with a grass fire on our hands. Luckily we were able to stamp it out, and we dumped the remainder in a cup with a bunch of water.

I do not see, or understand how tracer rounds can start a fire at an indoor range. I especially dont see a range safety official letting their use continue. Tracers have been known to start brush fires. I know that in my military experience.

Tracer rounds in a military setting are for -

1. Marking a target for direct or indirect weapons fire.
2. Initiating a weapons attack.
3. Starting a fire near the enemy.
4. The obvious - keeping track of your weapons fire on target.
5. And other purposes I wont list here.

Tracer ammo.decreases the life of a weapons barrel, and should be used cautiously.
