Default Shelby hamfest for 2008

The thread that discussed the possible canceling of the Shelby hamfest is here.
http://www.radioreference.com/forums...d.php?t=103207

There are a few of us from the greater Gaston County metropolitan area , but I can get some info posted for starters. There is more info on the other thread as well, so I linked it for reference.

The Shelby Hamfest will be moving to Gaston County for the next five years.

2008 Preliminary Brochure Information
http://www.shelbyhamfest.org/hamfest.htm

Pre-registration ticket order form - Fill form, print and mail with SASE to SARC

What I have heard is the hamfest has the park from Sunday through Sunday and there are 40+ campsites and the county is going to add at least 80 more.

It does not appear, according to the map on the Gaston County Parks website, that were is much in the way of indoor vendor space. It also doesn't appear that the park is open to campers / motorhomes ... which might impact the outdoor flea market area.

It will also be interesting to see how the ham club restricts access to the hamfest to attendees with a ticket, as the park is a public venue with multiple activities going on during the daytime ... particularly during Labor Day weekend. It's possible they might require a ticket for the dealer areas only, and leave the flea market area open to the public.

On the "plus" side, the park is easily accesible from Hwy 321 - and only a few miles from I-85 (exit 17). There are several fast food places nearby for meals. There are several motels within 4-10 miles of the Dallas exit on Hwy 321.

Bear in mind that most of the 45 sites that are only 20 amps will be replaced with new sites that I am trying to get 50 amp service, thus it will not be 45 + 80 sites the first year. I am asking for as many as possible. There is more room to dry camp and generators are allowed. I think the fee for that is $5.00 per night without electric/water...This park is used for different types of events and they want to be able to adapt to different needs. To add more sites takes away from some abilities such as parking cars at the ampitheatre for "Pops in the Park" and Tennis, and other activities. The horse shows have always been the most important events, and the horse show participants need to be able to park horse trailers as well as motorhomes. They need room to handle horses etc... " Cotton Ginning Days" requires certain space allotments for motorhomes and tractor/engine/antiques and the such. I am hoping to get a web page up for information pertaining to accomodations and attractions. There are alot of things to do and see in the area. The website will be www.johnnyclick.com I have not yet learned how to build a web site, so it will be a work in progress. In the meantime, you can contact me at jclick@bellsouth.net or call me at 704-813-2627 for any info that I can help you with. The official website of the Hamfest is always a good place to check www.shelbyhamfest.org

I would suggest passing any thoughts such as attractions to the hamfest committee, instead of doing things that could make people think your site is actually speaking for anyone involved with the shelby club.

I make it perfectly clear that my suggestions are suggestions pertaining to Gaston County and Dallas attractions that are here now and will exist for all people to enjoy, Ham operators included. Dallas is a historic town and my home town. I have lived in either Dallas or Gastonia, both being in Gaston County, my entire life. My intent is just to let visitors know what is here. I hope to be able maybe to let Hams know which hotels may be full or still have vacancies. I have talked to local business owners to let them know that they may want to extend their hours or have more staff on duty during the week of the Shelby Hamfest. I want to be available to answer any general or specific questions about the area. I have no expertise in answering specific questions about the operation of the hamfest itself and will direct any questions to the Hamfest committee. Does this help you understand my intent? I hope so, if not, let me know. Thank you very much, Johnny Click W4LBN

I had to go to Cherryville today so I stopped to take a look at the new hamfest site. Wow! Pictures don't do it justice. This place is really nice and very big. There's actually some shade trees around too. I predict this is going to make an awesome hamfest site!
