Thanks Marshall KE4ZNR for the warm welcome! I wish I could get that close to KILM to get great close up photos like yours of that helicopter. I come to radio reference all the time, but it never occured to me to check out the forums.

Hello all... finally got around to registering and wanted to say hello from Craven County. I'm looking forward to learning more from the site and seeing what the East coast brings as far as new experiences in radio. (I am a recent transplant from the left coast.)

Radios: Uniden Bearcat 246T, Kaito KA1102, Eton FR-250

What do you monitor on a daily basis?: I am a semi-recent transplant to the East coast. When I lived on the West coast I was in a large city with a high crime rate- so I picked up great radio action around the clock: police, fire, EMS, etc. Now that I'm in a smaller city on the East coast, I hear less action but I have a different variety. So now I enjoy picking up KEWN aviation, local police/fire/ems, and some occasional NC Highway Patrol. I am also hoping to pick up my first numbers station, since I've been fascinated by them for years but not able to pick any up where I lived previously.

i live in wilmington, nc (new hanover county) and picked up a number station for about 2-3 months on a modified am/fm transistor radio. i'll see about uploading the audio file i snapped to youtube.

Kings Mountain
Realistic PRO-34 (still works), BCT-8, SC230 (for Races), and the Gordon Edwards version Scanner app for my Droid Bionic! (which I highly recommend! I used it to listen to the last shuttle liftoff)
occasionally monitor what I can pick up locally, but looking to get into the hobby a little more seriously, eyeballing a new Digital!
I also love the overlook at Charlotte Douglas been going there for over 40yrs.

Hello and good day to all.

My name is Kevin Heyboer and my HAM callsign is KD4UYR. I hold a general class license and I have been a licensed amateur radio operator since 1993. I have been a scanner listener far longer than that.

I am now located in Cherokee County, NC, about 12 miles west of the county seat of Murphy at appx. 2200 feet ASL. I am also 7 miles from the TN line and about 2 mi from the GA line.

For scanning, I have two very old scanners...Radio Shack Pro-2026 and Pro-2050. The Pro-2050 is the first 800 MHz trunktracker released by Radio Shack way back in the early 90's. I have a brand new Yaesu FT-2900 2 meter transceiver for amateur radio, and a very old Icom W2A handi-talki for both 2m and 70cm coverage. I use a J-pole antenna tuned to 146.50 MHz for ham transmissions and a J-pole tuned to 155.000 MHz for my scanners. I also have a 2 meter "Hentenna", which is a highly directional 9Db gain antenna design which I use to reach the 147.255 repeater northeast of Knoxville.

I am the new feed provider for the "Copper Basin" feed for southwest NC, southeast TN, and North GA.

I monitor, as well as feed, law enforcement and fire rescue in Cherokee and the surrounding counties. It is interesting to note that although there is a VIPER tower site on Joanna Bald, near Andrews, SHP also still uses 42.500 simulcast due to the mountainous terrain. The VIPER control signal here goes in and out as often as the wind blows and reception is "iffy" at best.

I am a trained Advanced Skywarn Spotter, and I used to be the Skywarn Coordinator for Pinellas County (Clearwater/St. Pete), Florida, in a position that I held for seven years.

I am a retired law enforcement officer, and I look forward to chatting with all of the members of this forum regarding both my vocation and my advocations.

~Monitoring mostly Raleigh FD, but I travel around NC a great deal for work and pleasure, and usually program local frequencies as I go.

Still lots to learn about this hobby. I was interested in HAM for a while as a kid, but never cut enough grass to buy a rig. Got a scanner after the tornados in April last year when, thanks to the RR feeds, I realized that there was a lot more going on than the news could/would report. Glad to be here.

Just FYI: there is a local scanner/shortwave group (TarheelScanner/Shortwave Group) that meets on the 3rd Monday of each month at the Red Hot & Blue Restaurant off Falls of Neuse Rd. We usually start with dinner at 6:30pm with a meeting topic starting at 7:30pm. Looking at my calendar it looks that May 21st will be the next meeting. Feel free to join us at the next meeting!
