Add another site to the list ...

C123-0046 Mount Gilead / Montgomery County, using a control frequency of 868.8625.

868.8625 is the same frequency that the Waxhaw site is using as a control channel. The Waxhaw site is maybe 5 miles from my home, but a 996 was locked on the Mt. Gilead site for more than an hour when I started monitoring about 4 a.m. today. Mt. Gilead is about 47 miles line-of-sight from my home.

(In custom search mode, with the control-channel-only setting on, you can look for control channel activity, and the scanner will display the site I-D. The feature allows a user to see which site they are receiving at any time.)

Off and on, I was also receiving site C123-0023 this morning, which the database shows as the Wadesboro / Anson County site. Other than hearing Hoke County EMS on the site, I really didn't pay it much attention, since I already receive another site out that way occasionally.

When I went to log the control and voice frequencies later on, though, I found that they did not match the Wadesboro site ... and they did match the McCain / Hoke County site. The McCain site is listed in the RR database as 6038-0023. McCain was using a secondary control frequency - 867.3125 - this morning.

If anyone can verify the site I-Ds for the McCain and Wadesboro sites, that would be appreciated.

Jeff,

I logged the Wadesboro last year late one night/early one morning, it came back as C123-023 with an alias of WADES on Trunk88. 868.7500 is what I logged as the primary, but T88 showed 867.6375 as the alternate. I can't say anything for McCain though.

Jeff, I live in south Charlotte near Ballantyne and cannot pick up the Waxhaw VIPER control channel as listed in your post, and the database. I use an outdoor antenna, but hear nothing on that freq. I am able to hear Union Co P25 and 3 different VIPER sites, especially nearby Pineville. Don't you think I should be able to receive the Waxhaw site?

>> The McCain site is listed in the RR database as 6038-0023.

And that's what I'm questioning ... is the database still correct ? I seem to remember another site was switched from one zone to another in the past.

It should raise some questions when I report that a control frequency was being used with the site ID C123-0023, and that frequency is not licensed to the Wadesboro site. Then you report that the McCain site has been using that frequency as a control channel for a couple of weeks ... and it is licensed to McCain.

So far, no one has commented that they have verified the McCain or Wadesboro site IDs recently.

There are several common reasons why you might not hear Waxhaw at your location, Hamstang. I mentioned in my first post that the signal strength of the control channel was significantly weaker than the voice channels. Tonight, it is dropping under 1 bar on my 996 at home.

I also related about how easily the Mount Gilead site dominated 868.8625 early this morning with its control channel.

But Waxhaw is operational, and apparently has been, according to the Viper newsletter. Listen for NCHP district 3 traffic on it. I already receive the Belmont, Pineville, Monroe and Wingate sites.

Default Wildlife - VIPER

Today, for the first time, have been hearing Wildlife on VIPER, on 50400. Also heard what sounded like Wildlife or Forestry on 64640.

64640 has been active for quite some time over here in Caldwell on the Hibriten site. Never have been able to nail down exactly what agency it is to submit it to the database though. I do concur that it sounds like Forestry or Wildlife though.

The 2500 and 5000 will for sure. The 1500 won't and I don't know about the 3000.

The 1500 works on Viper without any issues. I know, I've programmed some of them for an agency who uses them right now. The 300 works as well, for now.

I was told that the 1500 won't do the 9k6 data, nor the encryption, guess I was given the
wrong poop which happens. Wish I known that, they are cheaper and more readily available used.

From what little I've been able to find, the 3000 probably wouldn't, but I'd love to find someone who could make it work. I have one sitting on my desk, collecting dust.

The 1500 works. As of right now you don't have to have a radio capable of 9600 baud, just needs to be able to do 3600 baud. Once they switch to P25 then yes, you will have to have 9600 baud to work. The 1500 if flashed correctly will work when it goes P25 (9600). The 1500 does have the ability to have encryption also. It can have ADP, not sure about hardware encryption.

Don't believe the 3000 will work but could be wrong. I don't believe it has the ability to do ASTRO 25 trunking but will work fine on a analog ASTRO trunking system. The radio has also been discontinued.

Seeing as how VIPER is not an Astro25 system, the XTS3000 will work, as will the Astro Saber, XTS1500, XTS2500, XTS4000, XTS5000, APX7000, and even the MTS2000 if all you wanted to do was use it on analog talkgroups.

When the system is upgraded to a full Astro25 system, some of the older portables will not work. MTS2000's would not work at all, and Astro Sabers and XTS3000's would require a firmware refresh to work, and thus would lose some operational features.

One thing to keep in mind to is what templates* your servicing radio shop has.
Ours here in Wake just has them for 2500 and 5000 portables.

* may not be the technical term, but what program they have to upload to your portable.

The agency that I am with has around 10 of the 1500 XTS units that are being used on VIPER. I was thinking about buying my own radio but I'm not sure which radio to go with..

Well, then you radio shop should have the template for 1500 then.

I was advised by folks that should know not to get one and was told that
the State did not even buy them any more. However, folks here seem
to indicate that it will work fine.

Good luck with it!
