Default SHP Static issue

I have a general question about monitoring the NC State Highway Patrol via VIPER. I am new to scanning, so be gentle with me. My issue is that the SHP (State Highway Patrol) transmissions have a lot of static and this makes the transmissions hard to understand. The static almost overrides the voice level. I can usually make out what they are saying, but the static is very annoying. I am not sure if this is an inherent problem with the SHP VIPER Monitoring or if this is something particular to my particular set-up. All of my other VIPER monitoring sounds very clear. For instance, I can monitor the Raleigh Police Department very clearly from this same location. Here are the particulars;

I am monitoring from southern Wake county right on the Harnett county line. For simplicity I will use SHP Troop C, District 3 (which covers Wake county) as an example. I feel, if I can fix this issue for SHP Troop C, District 3 I will be able to fix it for all SHP talk-groups.

Equipment is a new Grecom PSR-500.

Control Frequencies;

868.78750 (Wake County Control)
868.56250 (Wake County Alternate)

TSYS object;
Alpha tag = NC SHP-Viper
Type = MOT 800/900
Dwell = 0
Att = No
Lout = No
AGC = Yes
SuperTrack = Yes
NFM = No
Boost = Yes

Talk-group info;
Alpha Tag = SHPTRPCDIST3
Type = Group
Group ID = 2096
Delay = 3000 (3 seconds)
Alarm = None

If anyone needs any other information on my set up please just ask. As I mentioned, I am new to scanning and am not sure what info is helpful.

Thanks,

Dennis

I agree that the SHP TG's aren't as clear as most of the other TG's on Viper....you might try them without the audio boost. I originally used the audio boost feature for SHP.....but it seemed to boost noise more than clear voice....probably just my imagination.....but the signal seems clearer if I just turn it up a lil, and forget the +6 boost.

I do think that low modulation is part of the situation here. SHP Troopers don't hear the radio traffic like we do. They are listening to the Multicast of both low band VHF and 800Mhz at the same time.
Only GRE radio I have these days is an old Pro 96. I use a Uniden BCD396xt for VIPER monitoring and it performs well enough to monitor any audio differences.
BTW Dennis: Welcome to RR.com!

Default Thank you !

Thank you very much guys ! At least this lets me know that I'm not doing something drastically wrong and other folks are experiencing the same issue to some degree. Being new to scanning I question my set-up first.

Thanks again,

Dennis James

Dennis-
Feel free to attend the next Tarheel Scanner/Shortwave Radio Group meeting in Raleigh next Monday Night (Aug 17th) at the Red, Hot & Blue Restaurant on Falls of the Neuse Rd. Dinner at 6:30pm with meeting at 7:30pm. If you bring your radio with you we can make sure there are no hidden variables that might be causing you problems. As always I will have my Uniden BCD396xt/996xt there for show and tell.

Well, remember the state is analog which means that you will have the same issues that you had when listening to a weak signal on their low band. Wake County is digital so it is either there or it isn't.
They did this so that you can make out what is said even with a weak signal. Digital goes away and there is NO chance of making out what was said.

It also retransmits the lowband. I heard a weak signal from the MOHP one day when the band was open that locked up the VIPER talk group with almost all noise. had I not been hearing MO directon the lowband I wouldn't have known what it was.
