scanning VIPER systems

Can anyone help me with setting up a scanner to work on viper system? I am attempting to scan Pender County, North Carolina Sheriff.They are on the VIPER system, I am using a radioshack Pro-2066 (I think) 800Mhz trunking scanner (analog). They are broadcasting analog and digital so I should be OK until they make the full digital switch. If anyone can help me set it up i would appreciate it. I currently provide live feeds here on RadioReference for Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender (emergency svcs [police/fire/ems])..If possible send me a private message with directions. Thanks. RC

Public safety in Pender county is all digital. You're out of luck with the scanner you have unfortunately except for listening to the Highway Patrol.

I am out of luck, I have a 2066 not 2096. It's an analog scanner. The info about viper on this website says they broadcast in digital and analog statewide??

I was confused too, original post reads 2096.
But, indeed, that does stink...

I appreciate the feeds you offer to the RR.com community
The reality of VIPER today is that analog talkgroups are the exception and
not the norm. Eventually analog will be phased out and the system will
be full P25. Don't panic this is not happening tomorrow but when considering
future radio purchases one needs to look at digital capable radios.
I wish I had a different answer but that is how things are.

That is accurate in a sense.

There are analog and digital channels statewide.

However, they may not be in use, and as Marshall pointed out, the majority is digital.


And furthermore, you being a SE NC (NHC) body like myself, I REALLY suggest you get a digital scanner soon.

Wish I could afford one now, but until then I am doin my best with the scanners I have. I have posted a "help message" to see if anyone wants to help raise the $. I even put it on my personal website. I have a few commit. Maybe I can sell some of my computer equipment or something. Can't wait for Tax Season!!!

I concur. I made the sacrifice and bought a PSR600 last year with my last little bit of tax refund money. Best investment I have made to date with a scanner. Just waiting for next year's refund to come around so I can buy a second one...

But here is Rowan County (Near Charlotte), we are going through an upgrade process & are moving slowly torwards the digital era also. I never thought the day was going to come for us here in Rowan until I saw them lay an XTS2500 in my hands 2 weeks ago.

When the funds allow, I must agree with the concensus, and advise you to get a digital capable scanner also. Really the only way to go these days.

Yeah I was pretty floored when I was @ a small beach town and they handed me a a digital. It is so unfortunate that we had to have something like 911 to realize we have to be able to ALL communicate at times, and not all of us (small communities) can afford this equipment. It's good to see the Feds. help, and everyone realize the importance. I have worked some nasty hurricanes like Fran and Flloyd. I thought that was a nightmare working with 20 different agencies and 20 different radio systems.I could not imagine the CHAOS during 911 and Katrina.

I was deployed to N.O. for Katrina and was there during Rita.

We drove down a mobile P25 Motorola system. It was pretty intense to say the least. But we tied in the Air Force and Army with patches and it ended up working VERY well.
