Is 453.42500 for UNC Chapel Hill Security or Regular Campus Talk?
Wondering who occupies this frequency, i know it says UNC Chapel Hill for Business but I wanted to know if its just regular Campus Employees or Campus Security is running on it as well unless its just UNC Campus Police or Campus Police runs along with the VIPER system with the city police?

I don't know about UNC-CH, but in another life I was a Campus Police Chief. The security guys had their own frequency, but talked with our dispatcher. We were once all on one frequency, but the security guys/gals, who were mostly work study students, had so much traffic we moved them. They got called for escorts, had to report opening and closing buildings, etc, etc. My officers were turning the radios down because of the constant chatter.

Yeah i can see why, same as i saw A&T's set up, but UNC Campus Police also run on the viper system now right or still using their old UHF? I probably didnt see that on the NC Viper list for Orange but ill look again.

Looking at the VIPER data on this site, there are four talkgroups for UNC-CH Police under Orange County and one talkgroup under the UNC-CH system on their TRS. I could not find a UNC system breakdown on VIPER.

BTW, the four are Dispatch, Admin, Investigations and Hospital. The TRS just says Police.

I guess campus police is on viper or they are on the old stuff and the college would be on UHF since they have no particular reason to be on VIPER

They are grouped under the Orange County heading because that is how they are setup on VIPER.
I can confirm that UNC-CH is on VIPER as I heard them myself this morning on my 396xt at work.

That would be the college right? Why would a college system go on the state VIPER system? I already know the PD are on VIPER as i hear em every time im on a patrol ride along.

Same reason that most other major universities (heck, most users in general) are on VIPER: Interoperability. NCSU, ECU, NC A&T, UNC Asheville are just some of the schools on VIPER.

I just dont see it irrelevant to be on a state emergency radio system but I guess thats just them, they have their own talkgroups but eh.. I guess its better to use then staying on the old stuff

More and different ways to communicate is never a bad idea....especially when you need to be able to speak to your neighbors who are on VIPER.

The UNC system is a State System, it makes perfect sense for them to be on a State Radio System.
He grouped them on the Orange system rather than having a UNC System breakdown for all the constituent universities and Schools.

back when the twin hurricanes went through the mountains of WNC around wcu they released all the students and used the ramsey center as a evac shelter. In a mass catastrophe it would be a good way of finding which campuses have room to be used as a shelter.... dang my emergency management classes are catching up with me again

Yup your right things go bad.. schools can just punch in a few buttons and go to a certain channel they are permited to TX on and ask for help, makes absolutely good sense.
