Can anyone tell me more specifically what the (VIPER) Wake county Public Safety TAC talk groups are used for ? It appears to be either EMS or Fire on these TG's (not sure), but I never hear a dispatch, they just all of a sudden show up talking on a TAC channel and it seems like I have come in mid-conversation. I have no idea where they were dispatched from, who they are or where they are. Any help would be appreciated.

Let's start at the beginning...a 911 call is received at Raleigh/Wake 911 and entered into the CAD system. Once entered the automated Locution alert system dispatches the call on one (or multiple) of the 3 Alert channels:

Raleigh Fire Alert= TGID 34000 (Silmulcasted on VHF 154.370Mhz).
Wake Fire Alert= TGID 33088 (Silmulcasted on VHF 154.190Mhz).
Raleigh/Wake EMS Alert= TGID (Silmulcasted on VHF 156.225Mhz).

If you monitor the above locution alert you will usually hear units dispatched, type of call, address, mapbook guide number and PS TAC or FD OPS channel.
If the call is a Fire Dept only call usually it will get assigned a OPS Channel 1-12. If it is a Fire/EMS/Police Call it will get assigned a PS TAC Channel 13-39.

Public Safety personnel not only hear the locution dispatch they also get the call via alpha-pager, rip & run printout, computer/cad inside EMS units, etc.

Responding Units have pushbutton DEK boxes inside the apparatus and they press a # button to signify being enroute.
1= Responding
2= On Scene
8= In Service
They also usually answer up on the designated OPS or PS TAC channel assigned (example "Engine 8 enroute on PS Tac 19").

You will also hear Unit's checking in and out of service on the 3 Dispatch Talkgroups:
Raleigh FD "Headquarters" HQ Dispatch= 33984
Wake FD Dispatch 1= 32816
Raleigh/Wake EMS Dispatch 1= 34416

On Calls where Wake County Units will have mutual check-ins with Western Wake County Units (Cary/Morrisville etc) the assigned radio channel might be Mutual 1-5 (On Wake County VIPER) or Mutual Aid 11-15 (On Cary's 800Mhz System). On calls that border Wake/Durham County calls might be assigned to Mutual Aid 6-10 which is on Durham's 800Mhz System.

I really need to finish that updated "Guide to Monitoring Wake County" that I started awhile back. I tried to offer it to the powers that be in Wake County but they did not want to bother updating the one they had that was 6 years old :roll:

That's the basics. I know I have probably forgotten something somewhere and will come back to this post in awhile and add something.

Oh, and both Johnston County and Harnett County both operate M/A Com EDACS systems which require a patch to connect their system to Wake County's 800Mhz Motorola System. On Calls where Garner FD might have to check in with Clayton Fire Dept units they use the JCC 911 Patch 26896. Same idea when Mutual Aid calls between Wake & Harnett Counties: Patch is setup on HCC 911 26864.

The en route announcement on the TAC channel for FDs is often to let the Chief know that the equipment is on the way or not. Otherwise, dispatch knows that the equipment is or is not on the way from the DEK. However, the Chief doesn't. If a DEK isn't marked enroute within a specified time, then the computer searches around for the next closest type and dispatches them. The Chief may know that someone is on the way to get the Rescue Truck, for example, and know to tell dispatch not to call a Mutual Aid Rescue Truck, as someone is on the way to get it and has called the Chief on the radio/cell phone to tell him know. Our Chief reminds us every meeting to announce that we're enroute on the TAC/OPS channel.
