Charlotte-Mecklenburg PD Museum - Radios
For anyone interested, CMPD is in the process of making a museum of the history of the CMPD. Currently in the rotunda at the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) there is a display case of the portable radios the officers have carried over the years. It goes back several decades. Next to it is also a MDT from the early days. The full museum, Beneath the Badge, will open in Spring of 2010 in the LEC. If you are in the area of 601 E. Trade you might enjoy looking at the radio display case. Today the lights were off in the case but I took a couple pictures to give an idea of what they have. Please pardon the low res pictures taken in a darkened case.

Great pics Bill! And a Saber can almost never look bad
Great to see that the Museum is close to being open. Gives me another excuse to head down that way after it opens and hang out.

Well, I guess I'm not the only who thought he recognized a Saber.

I wonder when CMPD stopped using those Sabers, Im guessing its not a System Saber? or it is? though those radios were pretty rare to find these days.. as ATF said to me once...

Thanks for the clarification on that.
Probably got passed around alot, and the antenna rests up against the driver and the seat.. if thats the way i can describe or i could say someone was a big person...
some reason when i look at it, it looks like you can see the coil inside the antenna or it could be some brown tape? im guessing CMPD were once on UHF or were they on 800Mhz with those Astro Sabers?

It is actually the coil. I remember looking at it. The rubber covering is seperated from the antenna base by about 1/4 inch. You always wondered what was inside the rubber, now you know. lol Also surprising they do not have a modern day radio on display in the case too.

oh i knew about the coil lol.. i took apart a cheap FRS radio when i got bored.. and for the last.. maybe when they stop using it they might put it up lol when they start going with little hand held communicators you would only see in Future Cop or some future law enforcement movie you would see or better, embedded comm systems. My imagination just keeps getting dorkier then ever.

I wonder if they need one of the old 12 channel full duplex UHF Mark-12 Motorola mobiles that were used before they switched to 800? I still have a few of them left from when they auctioned them off.

The contact person for the exhibit, per a flyer at the display, is Melissa Treadaway and she can be emailed at mtreadaway@cmpd.org and she can answer any questions. She can be called at 704-336-2757.
