It could possibly be the NC Dept of Agriculture. They have several research farms around the state

My .02 cents!

Not unless there is a subscriber radio in the Nash County area parked on a Wake County talkgroup. In that case that subscriber radio would be taking up radio system resources not designed to carry Wake Co Comms.
To sum up: if you wish to monitor Wake Co comms you need to live in the Wake Co area

This has been posted a long time ago but this might help you understand how SZ 4.1 works. Good reading and should help you understand how things work a bit more.

Any RR.com member can edit the Wiki...including you *hint hint*.
If one believes a certain radio related topic should be in the Wiki they are more than
welcome to create an article

Only if you have a darn good antenna and that antenna is pointed towards Wake Co.
Lets not confuse the poster that asked the question....he should not expect to
hear Wake County comms on VIPER towers outside of the Wake County coverage
area.

Encoded traffic on an old RPD "status" TG
Just an FYI, I happened to catch someone this morning running encoded traffic on what used to be called the Northeast District Status TG, 40144 on VIPER. I don't see it assigned to anyone in the DB now. Oddly, I don't know to whom I was (not) listening. ;-)

Monroe Troop H audio
Anyone else having problems understanding Troop H on VIPER? The audio sounds clipped, almost like it is over-modulated. It's only Troop H, all other digital comms on the Mecklenburg sites sound just fine.

Yes, but apparently it only sounds bad on scanners because I haven't heard any of the troopers comment on it. What type of scanner are you using? I have a 396XT.

VIPER in Macon County
I am new to the North Carolina Forum but have posted on RR Forums for years. We own a vacation home in Macon County (Franklin) and plan to move there upon retirement in about a year. This weekend, while in Franklin, I was monitoring the analog VIPER and heard traffic on the "SCOTLAND HOSPITAL" talkgroup and also "RICHMOND CO" talkgroup. My question is this - how is it I'm able to hear traffic on a talkgroup half a state away?

Welcome to the confusing but fun world of monitoring VIPER. VIPER is (mostly) a Smartzone system...which means that to hear a specific talkgroup off of a Smartzone site there has to be a radio affiliated to said site parked on that specific talkgroup. So on the tower site you were monitoring there apparently were radios parked on the Scotland Hosp (VMN) talkgroup and the Richmond Co Talkgroup. In theory this should rarely happen as talkgroups are provisioned to operate off specific tower sites to minimize tying up system resources but there are exceptions to this rule more often that not. So basically you just never know what you might hear off your local VIPER tower.
Running Trunk88 on a VIPER site shows all kinds of interesting affiliations
