ALE 8 NH
Anyone know why all I'm copying on this TG is motorboating, along with the unit id's?
If it was encrypted wouldn't the HP-1 automatically mute? Anyway at other times I copy traffic on this talkgroup with no issues.
What is also odd is one unit will be very strong, while the other sounds weaker, but they are both on the Pineville tower.

The "motorboating" you speak of is most likely the result of audio coming in from an analog patch from a conventional system. I sometimes hear the same thing from Burke County's VHF patch.

Scott,
ALE is on 800 in this area. They were on low-band simplex before hand. I know in some areas, especially the mountains, they still have a VHF radio for interop with the locals. The ALE unit that was talking was probably in a rough or low spot and had trouble talking into the system. If the radio is sending a garbled signal into the repeater, then that's what the repeater is going to send back out.
Patches will also do it like Rob said, but I don't think they've ever had any need for that down here, at least with ALE.

Thanks guys. Both units show id's on the VIPER system, I suppose he could have been talking to an ALE unit in another county via a patch. I routinely copy them around Charlotte on this talkgroup just fine, that's why I was wondering what was causing this.

Several new sites to report online for the western end of the state:
32 - Chunky Girl Gap
38 - Franklin Water Tank (Online for a few weeks)
40 - Wauchecha Bald
42 - Jackson County Airport
46 - Frye Mtn.
?? - Scaly Mtn.
We're lacking a lot of info for these sites so if anyone can provide further details, it would be appreciated.

Western NC Viper Peers
Not sure if this is what you wanted but it's all I've got today.
I'm running UniTrunker from Blairsville, Georgia on Viper sites Murphy(45), Joanna Bald(8), and WineSprings(10). Those sites report peers for following site numbers:
#32 cc: 868.3875
#38 cc: 868.7625
#40 cc: 868.9875
#41 cc: 844.4750
(Nothing for Site 42)
#46 cc: 868.3875 (same cc as #32... seems weird, they're not all that far apart)

I'd like to help. I'm in the area at N441 and US 74. I have a 396xt and a tapped pro-150. What and how are the questions, ie; what software needed and such. TIA

Nice detective work!
Which site(s) were you monitoring to get #41 as an adjacent?
Could you reconfirm the CC frequency 844.4750 when you get a chance.

#32 came in on Murphy, Joanna Bald, and Wine Springs
#38 on Wine Springs
#40 on Joanna Bald
#41 on Joanna Bald and Wine Springs
#46 on Joanna Bald and Wine Springs
I've seen the 844.475 come up as an additional channel on Joanna Bald and Wine Springs before but never as a Peer. But I haven't checked Peers in months until today when I saw Chris' post. I'll keep checking them over next few days as time permits. My yagi antenna is up in the attic and I don't have a rotator so monitoring other sites is a bit of a chore.
I'll post more if I come up with anything.

Don't bother.
I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a typo error. Strange frequency to see.
With rebanding coming and 6th channels being added to sites, there will be a lot of different frequencies popping up.

Press [HOLD] then 868.9875 then [HOLD]. Scroll downward one or two clicks, then press [HOLD] again.
This will search the 800 band where VIPER is used and any control channel noise should display the system/side ID. Pretty straight forward.
Vern, thanks for the info, I'll get those added in later tonight.

OK, this may come across as a "newbie" question (and may have been answered elsewhere), but after having gone back through this entire thread I've not been able to find the answer. With that being said............
I was finally able to get a BCD396XT (YAY!!!!) and I've started monitoring VIPER again. Lot's have changed in just the few years since I was able to monitor the analog side. I'm building my template and I'm at the point of adding the Federal TG's (DEA, ATF, etc) and that's where my question lies.......... DEA for example has "regional" TG's and I was wondering do their TG's as well as the other federal agency TG's have statewide access, or would that just be the common TG's? I know the typical rule of thumb is the "home county" and 1 deep is each direction but I just wondered if they had an exception to the rule.
Again, may have been answered somewhere else but I couldn't find it. And as far as VIPER goes I monitor the Faith Mountain site here in Rowan County and so far I've left it in open/search mode and this thing NEVER shuts up, LOL

Considering I've heard them using the Asheville channel while doing investigations in Greensboro, and the Raleigh channel while doing surveillance in Charlotte, it looks like they're statewide. Pretty sure they just twist the channel knob until everyone can hear each other.

All the federal VIPER portable radios I have seen all have the common statewide (special event) talkgroups in them. Also the feds usually have the local LE talkgroups of areas they commonly work programmed into their radios to talk mutual aid. For safety this also gives them the ability to talk to their dispatchers if they need help. Sometimes what comes up on the special event talk groups can be surprising and very entertaining.
See ya,

That's kinda what I figured and exactly why even though I have TG's for VIPER programmed I still leave it in search mode. I've been quite surprised at what I've been hearing lately lol.
