Default Digital Question

I need help and have a question about my county, that are using digital and analog. I live in Clay County and my PD is using digital and analog. I think there radios will switch from one to the other on there own. I have done searches in the 800mhz and can not fine anything from them. Can they be digital in the vhf range and if they are how would I do a search with my PRO-106 scanner? I have done searches between 150.000 and 160.000 range with no luck. I do pick up one or two frequencies that sound like the control channels do on the 800mhz towers.

About 2/3 the way down the page on this system (Voice Interoperability Plan for Emergency Responders (VIPER) Trunking System, Various, North Carolina - Scanner Frequencies) are the Clay County talkgroups. Try using the control channel(s) for the counties closest to you to see if they have what you're looking for.

This page (Clay County, North Carolina (NC) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference) has frequencies specific to your county (note some sites, like the state-wide one above cover more than one county so check all of them near the bottom of the page to find all of your county's signals).

Hi n5ims,

I have all the frequencies from here programmed in to my PRO-106. I can here them when they use analogy, I need to know how to find what digital frequency they use. I have searched and scanned the 800mhz, but have had no luck finding anything.

Hi W8RMH,

Thanks for the link, but I guess I'm not asking my question right.

Clay County has went digital in the past year. I can hear them on analog and have all the frequencies. When they use digital I can't hear them on my PRO-106. I think there radios can switch from analog to digital on there own, sometimes I only hear one side of the conversation. There is no where in the database that has the frequency they use when talking on digital. I have done searches in the 800mhz using wildcard and have found nothing. I can only get Wine springs tower in Macon County from where I live and have heard nothing on that tower pertaining to Clay County.

Could Clay County be using digital in the VHF range as analog and if so, how do I search for it with my PRO-106 scanner?

I have search for hours and have found nothing. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or looking in the wrong place. Thanks for all the help!

I looked in the VIPER Database and did not see any 800Mhz frequencies for your county yet. I would do a search in the 860-870 range and see if you can lock onto a control channel. If so then you should be able to enter the VIPER TGID's for Clay County and you will be able to listen.
If they are simulcasting on the VHF Channels you should still be able to hear everything though.

HI RMPDCOP,

I have spent hours searching like you said, but with no results. I don't know if there radios simulcast on digital and VHF at the same time. I do know I'm missing a lot, because I can not figure it out. They have there own repeaters around here for VHF and was thinking if they are using the same locations and put up repeaters for digital, can they still be using VHF,but digital? There is one to two frequencies in the VHF range that sound like the old dial up modems did when dialing up.

I do know a new tower has gone up here in Clay County and it is for VIPER, but I don't know when it will be operational.

Are they using Nexedge or Mototrbo? My agency (Tryon PD/FD) is moving to the Nexedge digital, but we will still be able to communicate in analog to the Sheriffs Office which is still analog. As I understand it, if we answer an analog call within a certain time frame, we will transmit in analog otherwise we stay digital.

I don't know if that is what they are using. I have a friend that is a detective at the PD and I asked him, but he could not help. He said, he has no idea, all he knows is when he presses the mike it works, lol. Could someone tell me how to search for Nexedge or Mototrbo systems on a PRO-106 scanner? Thanks

Are you monitoring the analog frequencies with CTCSS enabled?

Yea it is enabled. Everything that is in my scanner now has been downloaded from this site and installed with ARC500.

I highly suspect a NEXEDGE system based upon who takes care of their equipment. They are a Kenwood dealer. Search the FCC database based on Hayesville NC and frequency range of 150-165 MHz. You will notice license show emissions designators of 11K2F3E which is 12.5 KHz analog voice. I highly suspect they are running mixed mode repeaters if the Kenwood platform will support same.

ULS License - Public Safety Pool, Conventional License - WQGL642 - CLAY, COUNTY OF

ULS License - Public Safety Pool, Conventional License - WQFW517 - CLAY, COUNTY OF

Thanks KI4M,

I will see what I can find. I do know a guy that works for the fire department and he said they gave him a new Kenwood HT about 2 months ago.

If you are using CTCSS decode and they are mixed mode on the same frequencies, the tone would keep you from hearing any digital transmissions.
I don't know how the PRO-106 works but you probably need to disable the tone to be able to hear both analog and digital on the same frequency.
That is only in case they are P25. If they are NEXEDGE you won't be able to hear the digital audio but at least you can tell when they are talking.
