Default Radio Shack Pro-106 VIPER Setup

Hey guys,

I'm having some issues......... I've just added a Pro-106 to my collection and I've got an issue, and before someone says it the reason I'm posting in here and not the RS forum is because it has to do with VIPER.........

I've got the Salisbury-Rowan TRS setup in it and its running like a champ with a stubby antenna, however I'm having issue getting VIPER to perform worth a flip. I've tried several different setups for VIPER in the 106 (going off suggestions and from the Easier to read page at marksscanners.com with no luck). I've tried adjusting and tweeking and the only time it picks up decent is when I'm at home. While I'm out and about I've tried the stationary, and roam settings, and even tried turning those off and just letting it "track" the sites here (Faith Mtn and the one at Troop E HQ) and it just doesn't like it. It's almost like it doesn't want to decode the CC even though under analyze it shows the CC decode at 99%, not to mention the 396 right beside it is decoding just fine, also with a stubby antenna.

Is anyone using a 106 for VIPER and if so can you offer some suggestions? If you've got a programming file you can share that would be much appreciated as well. I've got both ARC500 and WIN500 so either file format is fine.

I usually don't have issues setting up my radios but this has me stumped. Thanks in advance guys !!!

FD,
Sounds like you've got it now! I have a Pro-106, configured for VIPER, and you can PM me with any more questions!
Try a good antenna, like the extendable handheld one, from RadioShack!
I had trouble getting VIPER in the car, and that fixed it for me!

I appreciate it. I've got an antenna on the outside of my van (Motorola 700/800 whip) that I use for fringe areas. I'm actually working on the file that was sent to me as we speak. I think the 106 just seems a little more "finiky" on VIPER than my 396 is, but there again is the fun with this hobby is trying different settings to get it tuned in just right.

I've got a RS 800 antenna on the 106 and a "modified" RS800 on my 396. I'm getting ready to order an 800 stubby with SMA for my 396 so I can lose the adapter, and I'm going to get an 800 dipole (w/BNC) for the 106. It just seems that the receiver in the 396 may be just a bit more sensitive, but both of the are animals and are both work horses when it comes to features.

BUT if you feel so inclined to send me a copy of your setup I'd love to take a look at how you've got your 106 set up as well. If you decide to just send it to the email address in my signature

No, I don't think mine would do you much good!

Just a note, I set VIPER system settings to "Roam" and the threshold "Hi" to 95 and threshold "Lo" to 45! That seems to works the best!
