They are on the new digital VHF P25 system. You can't hear the county tones in this system. You will hear Goldsboro FD dispatch tones and you will also need a digital scanner to monitor this system.

How do they alert their members? They don't page over P25.

All P25 and digital systems still use a conventional VHF/UHF frequency to tone-out Motorola Minitor Pagers. You will hear standard analog dispatch tones and voice on this frequency.

I've got a contact at the 911 center, and asked him, I'll see what he says. I'm sure they haven't abandoned Minitor pagers just yet...

No problem. Glad I could help.
If anyone from around wilming remembers, 152.24 is an on IG/IP (old FCC license codes) paging channel. I think ComSpec out of Wilmington was one of the last ones to use this freq. They had it set up for local area paging only (like 2 or 3) counties only some time ago.
Glad to know its working and you can hear it in Kinston. I wish I could hear Pender County while inside Pender County, but we've always had that joke down here, that "...to hear Pender County, you have to go outside the County".
My Pender pagers does activate in mid-southern Wayne County from time to time...

I have also confirmed that Wayne County still pages EMS on 155.280.
Yeah, Pender's VHF site on 155.700 used to pretty strong, but when they narrowbanded it, it went down some. They are also still simulcasting fire dispatch on 155.145 for pagers on the east side of Pender...

I have a question. Does EMS, Goldsboro FD, and the Wayne County VFD's use different pagers? I can hear EMS and Goldsboro FD being paged on the TRS. I'm confused. I used to hear the VFD's being paged when I began monitoring this system a few years ago. What changed?

As far as the city FD, you are hearing tones, but they typically don't use pagers. They used to have circuits in the radios at each station that alerted when each station's tones were sent, but that was back in the day when they were on low band and then high band. I'm sure they are alerting each city FD station through something like SelectCall (on a Motorola system), but send the tones as part of tradition or just to get the attention of those that have heard the tones for so many years and are used to them.
County EMS could possible be using pagers or handheld radios programmed to act as a pager and radio.
Here in Pender County, Fire & EMS were both of VHF before going onto VIPER. The tones were sent on both VHF and VIPER, but sending tones on a digital 800 trunking system really doesn't do anything. Now, Pender County Fire sends tones on VHF only and the same for EMS. Pender EMS units still carry pagers for alerting purposes, especially late night/early morning hours.
