Posted a little over 4 years ago about usage of VHF, and VIPER in the county. What has changed? Planning a day excursion to the flea markets.

>Nobody knows anything about Cherokee county North Carolina??

Well honestly I didn't see it Larry. Cherokee County is still analog. They used the DMR for a couple of weeks then have appeared to abandon it.
P25 Phase 1 VIPER in use by many agencies in the area including Cherokee SO. Clay Co is NXDN exclusive. Valley River casino is using a DMR CAP+ system with encryption.

Thanks for the answer Larry. I was beginning to wonder if anyone scanned in WNC:)
I certainly do miss Monitoring Times.

I'm surprised that VRC is using a TRBO system as the Cherokee just upgraded from a LTR to a trunked NXDN system with encryption.

Well that isn't good news. Makes it harder to hear security. ;-) VRC is definitely MotoTurbo and not everything is encrypted. Have heard a couple of apparent TGs in the clear that sound construction or maintenance related. Applied the new upgrade a few minutes ago so will have to take a trip into town to see how it works now.

Now if Paul can get that NXDN upgrade out there I will be a happy camper (assuming Clay isn't encrypted).

So do I Larry. Have you been monitoring our mutual friends down there at Camp Merrill lately? Looks like there have been some changes if I read the RRdb right. Site 9 is best here. Gayle and I are thinking about a trip down there if I can get this 436 trunk analyze and discovery features to work. I still have issues that blew up on me when we were in Biloxi/Gulfport and I was trying to monitor the Navy TRS down there. Sure would like to know what I am doing wrong. ;-)

Chief Larry

Haven't monitored Merrill in months. Just put the UHF antenna on the 197. Getting a 99% decode signal. Will see what happens. My mistake. Didn't check what scan list I was on. It was 58% and then dropped out the bottom. Haven't successfully monitored them. That's why it doesn't get much attention.
I got a WS-1088 for my birthday a little over a week ago. It is outstanding on sensitivity and receiving DMR. Have been using it as my new mobile.

I hope somebody can help me out with trying to get analog frequencies for Cherokee County.

Here is the situation: I am sending somebody in that county a receiver that I absolutely MUST have pre-programmed ahead of sending it out. It's a Baofeng UV-5R that will be used as a scanner. They are actually located in Murphy it that helps.
Looking at the threads, it appears that the county Sheriff has gone digital? It is a little tough for me to figure this all out and they have been waiting a week for me to even get this in the mail to them. Good thing it's family, or I would have heard a bunch of complaints by now. (I probably will anyway eventually).

I wrote somebody on here about a week ago and have not received a response yet. I don't want to send this out with frequencies that don't do anything, or worse yet - end up playing digital noise that drives them crazy.
lol

All I need are the basics like Murphy and Andrews Police dispatch,Sheriff, fire dispatch (but not fire-ground ops), State Police & Highway Patrol simulcasts - if any, other related county services, but they can only be VHF high, and UHF. This unit will decode tones, so they would be a great help in cutting out interference from their tv's and other appliances.

I'm really not sure what has gone digital and what remains for the most basic of scanners. Any help at all would be very much appreciated. I don't want to have this sent back and forth just to program a few frequencies. They are not the type to follow programming instructions very well and get confused easily.

I want to send this out to them on Monday if at all possible but I want to make sure it is right to begin with. I am giving this to them for free and don't want it to turn into a headache.

Anybody have this current information?

Hopefully, you read Post #3 about the county SO and FD being on VIPER. It appears, according to the RR database, that Murphy and Andrews are still on conventional VHF. The only way to find out is to program and listen. The UV-5R will be useless on the statewide system. The Chief lives in Brasstown Bald and would be the most familiar with the area.
My take, no county SO/FD/EMS. Fire ground in Murphy, FD in Andrews. The rest is digital.

OK NC1. Since I'm the guy keeping up the far WNC area on the db I can say that the RRDB is current. No Cherokee Co has dumped their DMR system and reverted back to analog. They do make an occasional trip to VIPER but 90% of their activity is VHF. Here are the freqs of primary interest:

154.445 Co Fire Dispatch East PL 156.7
154.995 Co Fire Dispatch West PL 156.7
155.160 Co EMS/Rescue Dispatch PL 151.4
155.340 EMS to Murphy Medical Center PL 151.4
158.970 SO Dispatch PL 88.5 (dispatches for Andrews PD also)
156.2175 Murphy PD PL 151.4

That is it for Cherokee Co.

Thank you Airboss!

That is mostly what I was looking for, along with (more importantly) confirmation that there is activity on them.
Those were in the database but occasionally they are outdated and no longer useful, so when I came across this thread I thought maybe there were some major changes. It's good to know the info is current.

I see there are some tactical channels listed and was wondering if they were of any use. If they are usually of no significance, I will not add them to the list. If you don't know, that's still a good answer for me.

I may just put the WalMart MURS frequencies in there for when they go shopping. You never know what will be said over those things, lol.
Anything else worth listening to out that way besides local that you know of?
