On WRAL news the other day, I saw NCHP playing with their latest toy - LIDAR.

http://wral.com/traffic/story/1513029/

Yesterday, I heard Cary PD (on Tac 5) playing with a LIDAR gun too. Today I heard Cary PD, again on Tac 5, in another sting operation.

I tell ya, I don't really look forward to the widespread deployment of LIDAR. I don't see how a detector can be made for it, since it is a laser and not a radio wave.

Anyway, I don't mind the enforcement of speed limit laws, but if they're going to do that, it would be nice if speed limits were set with the 85th percentile rule (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_limit#85th_percentile_rule). With the number of people Cary PD has been pulling over (based on what I have heard today and yesterday, my guess is it tops 200), it is clear that this particular stretch of highway is well below the 85th percentile, since so many people are traveling so much faster than the posted limit.

If I was setting speed limits, open flat areas (such as US-1 south toward Sanford) would be 80 mph. Limited access freeways would all be 65mph or 70mph, except maybe in the mountains, and other highways would be 55 to 70 mph, depending on conditions and density of cross traffic.

Anybody know how to petition the government to increase speed limits to the 85th percentile?

Re Lidar

I live near I-40 and can often hear the HP call in the violators to the catch cars. I assume they are using the LiDAR too. Its pretty interesting to listen to.

I'll tell you though, so many people drive so excessively fast and reckless around the Raleigh & Wake Co area I'm really glad to see the enforcement with Lidar. They drive like its the I-440 speedway and the HP is usually stretched too thin working accidents and needs much more manpower.

A lidar beam is 13 inches wide at 500 feet so more than likely your Radar detector won't alert. If it does then go
ahead and pull over to receive your ticket cause you were the person he was aiming at. Detectors work great with
Radar but Lidar is a different story. Officers using lidar guns are trained to shoot at your Headlights and Front Tag to get a
good reflection, so if you have a front tag I would take it off.

Lidar beam at 500 feet..... It's no where near your Radar detectors Antenna.
Laser is a Beam not a cone like Radar.

Mount your detector LOW on your windshield if your in an area where laser is used
Mount your detector High on your windshield if Laser is not a concern.

With Radar, for every 6 inches higher you mount your detector you gain half a mile....

If your looking for a good detector here are a few that I would recommend.

Escort 8500 X50
Valentine 1
Beltronics RX65

Stay away from Cobra detectors, they preform the worst and set off other
detectors on the road. In other words they pollute the spectrum with frequency leakage.

I do not condone speeding and breaking the law in any way, I just really like the technology.

By the way this is the Lidar gun they will be using to Tag you

I hope this helps everyone understand a little better....

i agree with the above 100% , with lazer, by the time your detector goes off, its too late lol
and lazer guns are the main reason that pretty much all lic plates are reflective...i think K40 makes a lazer detector that mounts right on your plate, not sure if they still make it, or if its any good.., plus, if you decide to remove your front plate, you may get a tiket for that too, as the states that give u 2 plates usually make it a law for the front plate to be there, i know in NY its a law

???

I think the "reflectiveness" of many states' license plates has to do with making them more visible to law enforcement ( and civilians ) approaching or driving behind a vehicle in low light conditions, as well as improvements in paints, finishes and their application.

Or maybe the prisoners are just buffing them more at the corrections facility : )

" Veil " may be a good option.

This site may help... Roy is a great guy and his Knowledge is unbelievable.

Urban Legend along with removing front plates etc. NONE of that is going to help.

I would suggest staying within the speed limit as a deterrent to getting tickets or for those who decide to speed, just take your medicine.

Well, as far as Veil Jamming Laser, Yes it is an Urban Legend.

What Veil does is decrease the Reflectiveness of your Head Lights and
Tag so the Officer won't get punch through as fast. It will give you
a "small" amount more time to slow down. but will NEVER jam the gun.
The officer will get a reading at some point.

There are other ways to defeat laser but I'd rather not discuss those kinds of things
on the forum. These ways are legal in every state EXCEPT for these states below.
Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois and Washington DC.

Look at those sites and you will find more information that is not Urban Legend or snake oil.
I'd love to discuss this technology but I'm afraid I'd make some enemy's.
We have a lot of very cool officers on the site and this may cause some friction.
So I will leave it up to you guys to do the research. I can show you the door but you have
to open it.

Staying at or a little above the speed limit is the safest. I myself do five over but nothing really more. E04

You can find ways to beat radar and laser. You might get by with going 5 or 10 MPH over the speed limit. However, the officer's estimated speed of your vehicle is often enough to convict when one is traveling 15 to 20+ MPH over the speed limit. Most courts in NC say a reasonable person can estimate speed.

NC Ranger is correct...... If your going over 10 or 15 mph the officer can estimate your speed by vision.
Officers are trained to do this and are very good at it.

Well, it is possible but most of the time at 200 ft. you get punch through.

I'm not talking about " Rocky Mountain Radar Jammers " , Those
are Passive Units and do not work.

Fortunately, here in Charlotte we do not have Laser yet. Although Raleigh does.
Charlotte is toying with the idea of Kustom Pro Laser III's from what I have been told.
We only have K, KA, X ( Order by most used )

Best thing to avoid a Radar Ticket is one " Don't Speed " or get a high end Detector.
A detector will not save you from "Instant On" so just stay behind someone 200 ft. and
let your detector warn you while their getting hit.
