Default Tg59685

Monitored Lakewood Fire on TG59685 yesterday and today. Earlier today there was a lot of activity from Lakewood Fire. I couldn't tell if they were working a live fire or running a training session.

Several transmissions were from Firefighters using respirators (oxygen masks). Those comms were readable and remarkably clear.

I am only 2 miles from the Chagrin P-25 tower and have not heard Solon FD. Like Ed I hear them on the UHF channel. It will be a sad day for us Valley listeners when Chagrin & Solon abandon their UHF for this garbage P-25 System. 80% of the Chagrin PD, FD and Solon Pd P-25 transmissions here are so garbled you can't understand them while the UHF is very clear.

John,

Sorry to hear about your LSM issues. My receptions changes with the weather. Sunday the garble was so bad I turned the radio off and worked on other projects. The project I was working on required me to pickup parts at Micro Center. While there I picked up an item that has greatly improved my reception.

I'll send you an email with the details.

Bud

I'll keep the ears up tonight for Solon Fire ... I was wondering why they were left "out there" when the PD switched.

No pizza pan. But it's what I'm calling a Poor Man's Yagi. I sent you and Ed a PM with the details.

Including tax it cost me only $12.

Bud, would you mind sending me details on the PMY My reception here in Bratenahl is fairly good on the county system and real good on the Cleve. system but if I could make it better why not.

That was definitely Solon Fire on there full-time.

They're using it right now. Seems safe to say this can be added to the database.

In case you guys see the green highlight on the Lake Co Simulcast site in the RR database, nothing significant was added. I simply modified the lat/long slightly and forgot to suppress the timestamp.

I live in Twinsburg which borders Solon using a Pro-106 can barely make out their transmissions..only a few miles away. Makes me wonder when everything is converted to MARCS P-25 is it still going to be this bad.

Indoor 700/800 MHz Yagi Directional Antenna with Desktop Stand

Bit pricey, might be worth a try.

While at Micro Center this Sunday I spotted a $10 HDTV antenna that looks like a small Yagi.

Here are the details:
Make: SuperSonic
Model SC-602
Freq Range: 470 - 860 Mhz
Antenna Gain: 10db (really?)
Range: Up to 40 miles (OK if you buy the 10 db spec)

It comes with a base that's also wall mountable and a 3ft coax cable. I also bought an F to BNC adapter for a just over $1. Total cost for antenna and adapter including tax $12.

Bottom line, it's working really well for me.

There is a 700 MHz, site planned for 3901 Guthrie Road in the Dayton area. The MARCS office has applied for an STA to place this site on the air ASAP. Here is the application submitted to the FCC:

Default SuperSonic SC-602

Well...being able to focus on a single tower with this admittedly flimsy yagi has made a nice difference on 3 systems:

1. Lake County - Huge difference. Sounds like 95% clear now or better.
2. Cuyahoga P25 - improving greatly. Still trying to find the sweet spot, but garble is greatly reduced.
3. Cleveland P25 - better, still need to play, some clear, some garble.

I was switching back and forth between my RS 800 MHz duck and this yagi. Last night was one of those nights where Lake County was sounding good anyway, with the RS 800 duck, but overall this yagi is promising, especially for $10.

The trick is knowing where to point it, which sometimes isn't obvious. I am using a compass to record the bearings from North, so I know where the best spot is for each of these systems.
