Akron Area Scanner/radio stores
I'm wondering if anyone knows of any stores in the Akron area that sell scanners and have people that actually know about them. I'm looking into getting a digital scanner becasue my Pro-97 is pretty much useless around here becasue from what I can tell, most agencies have switched to digital trunking radios. I know radioshack sells them, but the people that work there dont know much about them. I dont know anything about digital/trunking systems and I have no clue how the heck to program one for trunked systems so I'd like to look at computer programs that will program a scanner.

Radio Shack is the only one I know of... they will be on sale on black Friday and there are several good computer programs that will make programming easier.
So stop by and look at the Pro-106, mine works good on the Summit County system when I listen to it. Stark also sounds good along with MARCS

Since you are not familiar with Trunking radios be aware that The Radio Shack Pro-106 does not come complete with all the accessories that the GRE-PSR 500 comes with even though they are the same radio. Also, there are several other differences such as promptness of radio updates. There are numerous posts on RR highlighting the issues I have raised here. Be sure to check them out before jumping in to a Radio Shack model. Also Uniden makes digital trunking radios. Since you are looking at spending between $350 - $500 on such a radio do your homework on RR first.

Most Radio Shacks in Summit County will program the pro 106 scanner for you if you buy it from their store. They simply clone the scanner from one they already have in the store (usually the display model). If you end up buying a pro 106 and they wont/cant program it for you, send me a private message and I can clone mine to yours (free of charge). I live in Kent and have alll the Summit co. frequencies.

Yeah I have been reading around on here and figured out that GSE makes the scanners for Radioshack. What does the GSE come with that the Pro-106 does not? I'm guessing stuff like a computer cable and antenna and little stuff such as that. I have an old Pro-97 which I have read is a bear to program for trunking(I have never been able to figure it out even after reading the directions). How is it compared to a Pro-106 and its equivilants?

I bought my PRO-106 from the Stow location on Hudson Drive there is a manager named Ed there, he is very good with scanners. I would recommend the PRO-106 for the Summit County System, I monitor it every day with my 106, they preprogrammed my scanner with either the database or a scanner in the store but it did not have all of the talkgroups and frequencies on it so I had to program a lot into it. I can also assist you with programming it if you don't understand it at first.

Summit County OH Rebanding
With all the discussion about the best scanner to use in Summit County OH, does anyone know when Summit County OH plans on rebanding? Also, does the PRO-106 support rebanding?

The GRE & 106 are the same electrically, GRE gets firmware updates out faster for some reason. The GRE comes with an adapter and programing cable; those are extras you'll have to buy with the 106. And I believe GRE supplies a simple programming program on CD

I use a Uniden 396T and 996T. If you decide on one of those, I would be glad to help you program them.

There is an electronics store on Market Street at Union Ave a couple blocks from downtown near the Akron U. campus. They have the Uniden brand digital scanners that they will program for you at the strore. Sorry but I can't think of the name of the store off hand.

You will pay top dollar at AES. There are plenty of on-line options that will save you a few bucks.

The electronics store in Akron referred to above is Phil Cap .. corner of E Market & Union St.
They are expensive for buying scanners, but they have all sorts of electronic gadgets & expertise. I purchased the SMA / BNC adapter for my HP-1 .. had to get a 2 piece adapter but it works great with Radio Shack 800 antenna that I already had. Reception is even better in use with the HP-1.

I run the interstates a lot. Is it possible to program the scanner to just pick up just the troopers that are on the interstate? Thanks, LtFuzz

Check out Universal Radio's (in Columbus) web site. I never had a problem with them. The Uniden Home Patrol (HP-1) is a great scanner.
