I believe the SO still dispatches Prairie Twp. I hear the same dispatcher's voices on the sheriff/police channels.

Lots of unsolved questions that you think about and then a few months later stumble across the answer inadvertently.

So does the Sheriff do any dispatching of fire anymore? Because my understanding is that they are REQUIRED by the state (or some other entity) to provide 911 PSAP/dispatching services for any and all townships in the county who request it free of charge. I know there was a big brouhaha that happened when a fire department in northeast ohio found out that they were being charged a couple of grand a month for dispatching by their PD when the county had to provide it for free!
The sheriff I don't believe dispatches anymore but they still can. I know you have to pay more to be dispatched by them. That was the case with Hamilton twp. They were dispatched by the sheriff until June of 2011 I believe. It was too much for them to pay so they went to CFD. I don't believe they can go back to the sheriff because they only do it for emergencies. I think they were grandfatherd in to the sheriff until the price increase. Also I don't believe they do it for free. I think CFD would take charge if a department needs it as the sheriff was always tied up upon dispatching.

The county is only required to provide it in counties below a certain population level, and it doesn't have to be provided free; some sort of fee can be charged to help cover the cost of equipment and personnel. Most counties don't charge a fee, though.

Negative; Prairie Twp is and always has been self-dispatched. They do have access to some FCSO talkgroups for interoperability, which probably accounts for why you hear their dispatchers there.

I could be wrong, but I think they've always had their own dispatchers. They are on the 800 system here under "15 PT DSP" (Look at the radio test knowledge still sticking with me!) but I guess that could always be a patch.

Yeah, CFD does this weird thing where they can bill per run. So each run costs a certaina mount of money to dispatch. It is definitely cheaper than what other dispatchers in the area charge to dispatch runs, but I was under the impression that it was free for the county to do it.

What's the threshold for the counties that have to do it vs those who don't?

And does it have to do with counties with townships that have their own police vs those that don't? Out where i am in rural ohio as a volunteer, none of the townships have their own PD, but in Columbus, pretty much everyone has their own PD.

Most of Columbus has its own pd. but in areas where there's no pd it's the sheriff. In my area on e there was a shooting we had CPD FCSO OBETZ Groveport Rickenbacker police Madison twp some federal group and highway patrol. That's how messy my area is.

Actually the Grandview Heights FD repeater is still up and on the air. The dispatcher at GHPD can use it to talk with the FD but there are no longer any tones. They went away when they transitioned to an IComm then a Zetron console. They simply pipe that audio into the PA speakers (and accidentally piped the instant recall recorder into those same speakers when they first installed it. Now that was fun)

Otherwise GHFD uses that channel for talk-around.

But 51's respond on 9 EMS 1 just like everyone else does. Does this mean that they have to carry multiple radios to also talk to the PD? Because that just doesn't make any sense (though we do have 9 radios on our trucks in rural ohio, so I can't be one to judge...)

They can talk to Columbus on the county trunked system and Grandview on the same radio.
