I am trying to get Jefferson county marcs in weirton,wv and sometimes I get a good Jefferson sheriff transmission but most of the time it is choppy and I never get a good transmission from Steubenville city and nothing at all from OHP Wintersville or St Clairsville or odot district 11.
What am I doing wrong? I am using the Motorola marcs for ohp and odot and ip for Steubenville and sheriff.

You are probably experiencing Simulcast Digital Distortion off the Jefferson County site which is a multi-tower simulcast site.

ODOT is on the IP system and OSHP may be too as most posts have switched to the IP system. They are off different sites than Jefferson County namely Adena and/or Stratton. There is a good chance the old MARCS system is no longer in use.

So how do I solve simulcast distortion? How can I get signals from ohp and odot?

As W8RMH mentioned in his post, OSP and ODOT have most likely moved to MARCS-IP. You can add the OSP and ODOT Talk Groups to your Jefferson MARCS-IP.

Regarding Adena and Stratton, you have the CC freq's from my reply to your post in the Radio Shack Scanners forum.

About your setup. I would recommend that you setup each as their own standalone system. In other words. Have a Jefferson MARCS-IP system, then create a Adena MARCS-IP system and then a Stratton MARCS-IP system. One additional comment regarding Adena and Stratton, they are a decent distance from your location. You may not be able to receive them. Setting them up is the only way to know for sure.

Here's the Talk Group info for OSP and ODOT:

what is the easiest way to program a scanner and is there a scanner that will pickup better than the pro 652 that I can get for 250 which is what I would sell the pro 652 for on ebay or craigslist probably.

ODOT and OSP are definitely on Jeff Co. Everything is if it's MARCS IP

Maybe someone can tell you how to put your 652 in Search mode instead of Scan mode. I have all my radios on Search for MARCS IP. Never know what you will pick up. Everything. I've never owned a RS scanner

OK what is the best radio for this area? I don't think my 652 is good so unless I can figure it out I'm selling it on Craigslist.

I have read here that the GRE/Whistler/RS scanners don't do well on simulcast systems like MARCS-IP.

You may be able to find a BCD396XT or BCD996XT for $250. These will work until they start using Phase II, which is reported to be far off in the future.

You might be able to get a 396/996, but they are not any better in my experience on LSM systems. Only BCD436/536HPs seem to work better than anything else -- not perfect, but better.

And I already told him that. He's looking for a cheap miracle that isn't going to happen.

I want to stay under 250 or 300. Basically what I would get for the 652 would be put into the new scanner with up to 100 extra. Would prefer to keep the 652 if I can make it work.

Ok I settled on a bcd396xt for now. How can I get a better signal from Jefferson County? I have the 800mhz antenna but it doesn't seem to help. I don't know much about the settings.

Digital AGC OFF, Attenuation ON, Just scan the Jefferson Site, turn squelch to 13 if you don't want to use Attenuation, and/or with scanner off Press HOLD and with it held, Press POWER and change to P25 THRESHOLD to Manual and try 7, 6 and 8 for at least a half-hour each these may help decode

+1 - the P25 adjustments can be changed as described in the Menu>Settings>P25 Adjust Mode. You can also experiment with the Menu>Settings>P25 Adjust Level.

The "best" combination is highly dependent on your system and where you are with respect to the sites. For me on my system I use 13/175, but my neighbor uses 11/150 on his. You just have to experiment with lots of patience.

The way I do it here in pa is simple. Use a non 800 antenna i.e. All band. Set any p25 adjustment to a higher level (uniden) is 5 to 13 and I set manual 10 so if gre or whistler compensate on the numbers. Then if needed att. If more is needed then I'll find a site that has most of the tgs from that site if possible. If not I throw the 800 antenna on and find a weak signal area with no att or nut Hong and run off that specific location. Sounds real picky and I can't be more accurate than that. It's a pain in the rear sometimes.
