Columbiana County Sheriff Arrested for DUI
Columbiana County Sheriff David Smith is due in court next week on several charges, including operating a vehicle under the influence.
The Ohio Highway Patrol in Guernsey County stopped Sheriff Smith's car last night along Interstate 70 in Oxford Township.
In addition to the OVI count, the state trooper charged Smith with speeding, saying he was traveling 81 miles per hour in a 65 mile per hour zone.
Smith was also charged with lane violations after the trooper says the Sheriff's car almost struck a tractor trailer.
The arresting officer says Sheriff Smith's breath smelled of alcohol, and his eyes were glassy.
A sample of the Sheriff's urine is being tested for alcohol content. The trooper says Smith told him that he was returning from the Buckeye Sheriff's dinner in Columbus.
