Default Ringing on Tulsa OKWIN

I have a pro-205 scanner. When listening to tulsa's 800mhz system, i get a high pitch ringing sound in some areas of tulsa and broken arrow. If i hit attenuation it stops. Could I be overloading the front end? I did finally get a 3db curly q antenna that is made by motorola and i dont recall it doing this before or not. Another thing, in some areas I am getting alot of static. Im not sure if this is cause i have a low feed line or not. Im running dual sheild rg-58 at 17 ft in car. Any help?

Concerning your "some areas" problem: there are areas in Tulsa where reception is weak.

One area that I am familiar with is 81st - 101st between Yale and Sheridan. This is caused
by the hill just north, which assuages the signal sent from KNJH431 - tower near 61 and Sheridan,
but more markedly reduces the signal from the tower downtown.

Attenuation, for me, causes my scanner to no longer receive a signal.

I have had the same experience of a buzzing or ringing sound on an Uniden 780XLT. It always occurred when I was within 3 to 4 blocks of a known Nextel/Sprint tower site here in Norman. I use a 3 Db curly cue antenna also. It was just a signal overload in my scanner. That is why your attenuation takes it away. I bought a 0 to 10 DB step attenuator and inserted in line between my antenna and scanner. In Norman 10 DB of attenuation took all that buzzing out and when I drove into a more rural area I could turn it back to 0 DB.
Just my way of dealing with the issues.

Where can I locate one of these? The scanners attenuation works good but I think the 20db's it cuts out is a bit much. Also im thinking my static is due to my cable. RG-58 isnt great at all for 866mhz... I have rg-11 sitting in my garage that i could use but idk if i wanna buy connectors for it and a new nmo mount to support such a thick cable.

I know that if I'm near some high tension lines it does the same and attenuation clears it up. I have to remember to turn it off once I get away from them!

I bought mine a long time ago and don't remember if I bought it at a hamfest or on ebay. They are precision test instruments so they can be kind of pricey. Mine looks similiar to the image show below. Mine has bnc connectors. I don't know if you want to mess with changing your coax unless your antenna mount is really old and weathered.

Ya i think your right on not messing with that cable. I have been wanting to run dual antennas. One for vhf/uhf and then a dedicated 800mhz. I may look into a new cable and equipment for the 800mhz then leave my current cable for the other antenna. I will also probably just use the ATT button for now.... Later on i might try to just use a 1/4 for 800 so it has no gain. I think thatll help out.

1/4 wave will work also that might just enough antenna to do the job. Good luck.
