Default Toronto Fire?

So, I know Toronto Fire will be going P25 digital this year... does anyone know if they will be encrypted? And once they move to the new digital P25 radio system will they shut down the old analog radio system? Thanks.

My speculation is No to question 1 and Yes to question 2.

I had heard that the new system will be like Hamilton and with TPS being the Sys Admin all users who wish to go on the system would be required to be encrypted but as we know things change so we will have to wait until the switch over is complete. For example all Halton fire dept radios have encryption capability but they have chosen not to use it at this time.

I did read that Toronto fire has ordered a commercial off the shelf (COTS) dispatch and station alerting system and I can only speculate it may be the same one Toronto EMS is using for the stations and trucks.

This could eliminate voice dispatching but advantage is the computer can dispatch many more call simultaneously to the various halls than human dispatchers can voice and they can lay off dispatchers with most of the work being done by the call takers. Those automated dispatching systems apparently are so good they can replace a room full of dispatchers leaving only one or two to oversee voice operations.

Asking questions is fine, but I do have to say, your database submission history is a little eyebrow raising . That's a lot of states to cover in such a short amount of time. I have to wonder how many of those changes you've submitted were actually based on you personally and directly monitoring those systems with your own ears for any extended period of time, or if they were based on you asking questions like this and/or from reading the forums.

Please keep in mind for future reference that you should only be submitting personally observed and verified information to the database. Not speculation, guesses, hearsay, third hand information, results of FCC license searches, Google searches, etc.

RR Database Submission Guidelines - The RadioReference Wiki

Other than that, I agree with your original post before you edited it...asking questions is indeed how you learn.

You should not hesitate asking but IIRC, you posted here a question about TPS downtown as the G20 were here.

Were you here because you live here and don't know the boundaries?

Or, as I bet a good number of us here imagine, that you are a protester or even a member of the black block and were using this forum for help in anarchy.

Apparently Toronto is going to one day put in a new communications system. Will fire be unscannable? Will EMS? Or the po-lice?

I don't know but I will give you some advice.

If you live in the 416 email your city councillor. He/she should have time to answer your question.

I live in Halton and I asked my city councillor about the new radio system. He not only answered my questions but even asked me if he could forward my questions to the police person who was the regions point person on the new system

He told me that he understood scanner fans but the police wanted to conduct their affairs in private. Happily, our FD is in the clear but sadly, transit and bylaw are also in the clear (zzzz).

Hope this helps, you'll earn respect here if you do some stuff on yourself.

But I do see why people here shake their heads when you post here.

Let's face it. He's well-traveled! I'd pay a buck for the IP Address for all of these posts, but I'm sure that's already been noted by the Admins at RR.

Perhaps someone we know by another name? Hmmmmm. Keep your eyes on the bouncing ball.

I noticed the changing locations too and just thought it was me. I also thought I once read somewhere here that misrepresenting ones location was prohibited on this site but I an not locate it now. I really doubt that she lives on the "Moon" too.

Some people think these strange "locations" are "cute", but it is unprofessional and makes if difficult to answer questions, especially when it involves their location and what they are trying to monitor. I think some people change/secrete their location to prevent remarks from "the locals" when posting in "their forum", or they are just paranoid for other reasons, or who knows, as EJB says they could be terrorists conducting intelligence gathering.

No Eric..
Still an outcast here in good old QC..
After the prov. election in Sept.12 the seller market took a big hit with the P.Q. getting elected..only offers on my house are 1/2 of what they were
prior to election. I want to move to "Canada" but won't give my house away for peanuts..have to stick it out until the market rebounds or the PQ's get tossed of of office..
Don't worry....I'M STILL COMING!!!

true the encryption price has fallen but for toronto to program encryption for police fire parking etc it's going to be expensive i hate to say it if they put encryption on anything it would be police and leave fire in the clear

And especially with Ford's big kick about cutting expenses..it would be a fortune to encrypt ALL the city services on the system so i doubt Fire & EMS or any other minor city services will be. ..but i say its a forgone conclusion that TPS will be encrypted..

That's where people are misinformed. The cost to add encryption is virtually nil these days. When you're talking about a system with nearly 14,000 radios such as Toronto, I'm sure they could get the cost down to $100/radio. At that point, you're looking at an additional $140,000 per year over 10 years. That's really nothing for a city this size. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if Motorola threw encryption in for free as an incentive to use Motorola as the vendor. With the system being P25, you could buy gear from anyone really.

most of the new digital systems that are sold nowadays have encryption as standard equipment, its not like they will charge you extra for wanting it.for example, out here in Durham when the contract was awarded to Harris, the police commented stating that it wasnt mandatory, but since its already equipped,we'll use it.
