Default Portland 800 - TG X-9

The other night on one of the discreet TG's on the Portland system,
I heard a (non-patrol) officer say "I'd like to go to X-9 for this if everyone has
that in their radios".

Since there was specific talk of a Fed agency prior to that traffic,
I assume X-9 references an encrypted talkgroup.

Has anyone heard that or similar references?

I think, but have not confirmed for sure, that the "X" talk groups are on the 700 MHz P25 side of the Portland trunked system.

I see and hear some activity on the P25 sites, but it's all encrypted.

There are encrypted ones on the 800, like SERT and drug stuff.

No. The 800 side is not technically capable of supporting encryption. Motorola phased that out with one of the system upgrades. That is why the 700 side was built out.

Now, if someone on 800 has a talkgroup that is encrypted on the 700 side affiliated, the effect is the same, just that an 800 user cannot talk on the talkgroup (because of the encryption).

X-9 likely refers to the selector switch settings on the radio that matches the template for that agency. Our older fire radio template has a 160 channel template; A through J and 1 through 16. A few examples, although it's very rare to hear them referred to this way.
A-6 = Portland Fire OPS-6.
B-3 = Clackamas County fFre Dispatch.
C-14 = Vancouver Fire OPS-55.
F-11 = Multnomah County Sheriff Dispatch.
